NICHOLS BEGAN YESTERDAY MORNING IN AN
ATLANTA COURTHOUSE WHEN HE OVERPOWERED
A SHERIFF'S DEPUTY... STOLE HER
GUN AND STARTED SHOOTING.
POLICE SAY NICHOLS SHOT THE DEPUTY IN
THE FACE AND THEN KILLED A COURT
REPORTER AND THE JUDGE PRESIDING OVER
HIS RAPE TRIAL. HE SOMEHOW MADE
IT OUT OF THE COURTHOUSE WHERE HE
KILLED ANOTHER DEPUTY AND PISTOL
WHIPPED A REPORTER TO GET HIS CAR.

BUT ONLY ONE DEPUTY WAS WITH NICHOLS
WHEN HE MADE HIS MOVE. THE LAW
REQUIRES THAT PRISONERS NOT BE
HANDCUFFED AS THEY ENTER COURT, TO MAKE
SURE THE SIGHT OF CUFFS DOES NOT
INFLUENCE THE JURY.

many courthouses to re-evaulate their
security plans.
But the Roanoke Sheriff's Department
assures the public that higher measures
aren't necessary, because they're
already there.

Stepped up security measures have been
in place in Roanoke for some time.
The City Sheriff's Department now
screens everyone as they come in the
building- -at the main entrances,
rather than on the way into certain
corridors or individual courtrooms.
Sheriff George McMillan says the
deputy who escorts criminal suspects to
court are unarmed.

But imagine not being able to find
your house.
This happened to man in Danville on
Monday.

came to visit a house he owned on
Cleveland Street... and found it was
missing.
He called police who
eventually figured out that a wrecking
crew had demolished the wrong house
back on July 29th.
They were supposed to
demolish 212 Cleveland Street.
Instead they took the
wrecking ball to 242 Cleveland.

residence at the time and hadn't even
seen it since last summer. He told
police he was in the process of selling
it when he found out it was gone.

POLICE SAY NICHOLS SHOT THE DEPUTY IN
THE FACE AND THEN KILLED A COURT
REPORTER AND THE JUDGE PRESIDING OVER
HIS RAPE TRIAL. HE SOMEHOW MADE
IT OUT OF THE COURTHOUSE WHERE HE
KILLED ANOTHER DEPUTY AND PISTOL
WHIPPED A REPORTER TO GET HIS CAR.

is assigned to crowd control in the
courtroom.
Sheriff George McMillan says he

to get a gun away from his deputies.

But on Monday, Danville police got
an unusual missing report...an entire
house.

came to visit a house he owned on
Cleveland Street... and found it was
missing.
He called police who
eventually figured out that a wrecking
crew had demolished the wrong house
back on July 29th.
They were supposed to
demolish 212 Cleveland Street.

wrecking ball to 242 Cleveland.

Everybody has a favorite movie,
"Vertigo" is mine. When Alfred
Hitchcock's "Vertigo" was released in
1958 it was virtually ignored. A couple
of decades go by and most people feel
that it was his finest work and one of
the best films ever made, EVER. By the
mid 90's all of the prints of this
amazing film had deteriorated badly.
Universal Pictures spent several
million dollars to restore the film
back to it's original grandeur
including laying down a newly
discovered stereo version of the
original score.
Jimmy Stewart plays San Francisco cop
John (Scottie) Ferguson. "Vertigo"
opens with a dramatic chase across
rooftops where Scottie loses his
footing and hangs precariously from a
building. Another cop reaches down to
help Scottie and falls to his death.
Scottie is left with severe vertigo
(and guilt) that forces him to retire
from the force. An old college chum,
Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore) approaches
Scottie and asks him to follow his
mentally unstable wife. Madeleine
Elster (Kim Novak) has become obsessed
with her ancestor Carlotta and is
convinced that she will die soon.
Scottie reluctantly accepts the job and
spends his time following the striking
Madeleine as she wanders around
picturesque San Francisco. Scottie
rescues Madeleine after a suicide
attempt and begins to spend much of his
time with her. As Scottie falls in love
with Madeleine, he becomes entwined in
a very dark scheme that will force him
to question everything he believes to
be true.
Nearly fifty years after this film was
made it still has an amazing power over
the viewer. The writing is immaculate,
the acting perfect, the cinematography
dazzling and the score beautiful and
haunting. Stewart plays the role of
Scotty perfectly with a balance of
tough cop and passionate suitor. Novak
plays Madeleine with a wonderful
iciness that is impossible to refuse.
Barbara Bel Geddes as Scottie's freind
Midge is the soft, sweet balance to
Medeleine's icy passion. Some very
simple effects used here are more
effective that millions spent on movies
today. Bernard Herman's haunting score
pulls you in and teases you. This film
is perfect, there is nothing that
should have been done differently. If
you've never seen it, make the time to
see the finest film ever made. If
you've already seen it watch it again
soon and remember what great film
making is all about.

to the DANA corporation.

A spokesperson says the company
wants to move those jobs closer to a
plant in Kentucky.
Right now the company employs
more than 350 people in Buena Vista.
DANA will start the layoffs this
fall.

project through Southwest and Southside
Virginia is dead.
Dominion Resources has let its
options on the property expire and
recently sent letters to landowners
saying there are no active plans to
continue the project.
The 279-mile pipeline would have
run from Charleston, West Virginia,
through Virginia to North Carolina.

is still going strong after five
months.

Work is slightly behind schedule and
organizers now hope to brew up more
cash.
The project involves taking the sign
off Billy's Ritz - renovating it, and
moving it to the Shenandoah hotel
building at the corner of Campbell
Avenue and Williamson Road.
60 thousand dollars of the 120
thousand needed to move and renovate
the sign has been raised.
And a 25 thousand dollar Joco grant
has been awarded.
That money will go toward the 50
thousand needed to maintain the sign.
Downtown Roanoke Incorporated is
working to get the word out to the
community-
