GRAPHIC=VIRGINIA The Pete Gillen era in
ENG#=1 Charlottesville is over.

UVa athletic director Craig

Littlepage made that official this
afternoon.

Littlepage read a prepared
statement, spoke for about 2 and half
minutes, but would not take reporters'
questions afterwards.

He never used the word fired, but
did thank Gillen for his seven seasons.

WIPE TO VO-NAT The ingredients for success were

there when Gillen was hired by then UVa
athletic director Terry Holland back on
March 28th of 1998.

Granted, Gillen inherited
somewhat of a mess from Jeff Jones, but
in the end he did little to fix it in
the ACC - where the numbers don't lie.

One of the more glaring stats of
Gillen's tenure is that in 7 years his
teams played 56 ACC road games and won
just 11 of them.

GRAPHIC=None The sights and sounds of children in
ENG#=1 Italy are hard to come by these days.

VO-NAT VO-NAT

*CG locator Rome, Italy

In a country whose culture has been
defined by large families, Italy now
has the lowest birthrate in the Western
World.

The average Italian family now has only
one child.

The Italian government hopes it can
help bring back the traditional family.

It has begun paying couples
one-thousand Euros for each child after
their firstborn.

It's too early to tell whether the
policy will work, but if it doesn't,
predictions show by the year 20-50,
Italy's population will shrink by a
third.
