students, faculty and family involved
with the Intramural Lacrosse team spent
the night in Alabama hospitals and
hotels.

collided yesterday afternoon near
Mobile, Alabama.
Thirty people were onboard the
vans... Thirteen were taken to area
hospitals.
Those who escaped uninjured
pooled their money for hotel rooms and

immediately dispatched a dean and two
of its pastors in the school jet to
Mobile.
They'll stay there for the next few
days to help the students cope with the
tragedy.

trying to hire an undercover agent to
kill Salem prosecutor Fred King.

ENG#=2 Salem Police say 19 - year- old
Charles Patrick Akers was awaiting
trial on charges including burglary and
breaking and entering, when they
learned of the alleged plot to kill
King.
While Akers was in custody in the
Roanoke County jail, investigators say
he talked with an undercover state
police officer by phone, and tried to
hire him to kill King.
Salem Police Chief James Bryant
says officers took the threat
seriously.

the Real Estate Tax by three cents.
Town Council hasn't raised the
tax since the 1980's.
It's currently at 20 cents.
The proposed increase would mean
a person with a 2-hundred thousand
dollar home would pay an extra 60
dollars a year.
Town Council members won't vote
on a final budget for several weeks.

Roanoke City school
administrators are trying to convince
parents and students that closing the
city's charter school is a good idea.

More than 75 parents and their
Children showed up to discuss the
future of the Blue Ridge Technical
Academy.
Due to a lack of money, the
school system plans to close the school
at its current location.
That's angered current students
who say the program is invaluable.

another problem, this one involving
Victory Stadium after parts of the
structure were deemed unsafe last week.

Last Week School board chairwoman Kathy
Stockburger met with the mayor and city
manager yesterday morning to discuss
contingency plans for high school
football this Fall.
Some of the options include
playing in the safe parts of Victory
Stadium or renting another facility.
She says a last resort would be
to play all the football games on the
road.
All parties agreed to take no
action until they have the final
structural engineering report.
