OQ=Steve Smallshaw, News 7. << NATSOT OF SCENE FROM TAPE

It was a scene of chaos and
destruction.

Around one o'clock Central Time,
two large passenger vans carrying
Liberty University's club lacrosse team
were driving along Route 45 north of
Mobile when one van came to a sudden
stop.

The second van hit the first,
sending it into the path of a tractor
trailer ...

SOT FULL

ACCIDENT VICTIM: WE SLAMMED RIGHT INTO
THE FIRST VAN AND THEN THE FIRST VAN
DIDN'T WANT TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF
IT, SO IT SWERVED INTO THE ROAD AND AN
ONCOMING TRUCK JUST DESTROYED IT AND
THE VAN TIPPED OVER, AND THERE WERE
GUYS TRAPPED UNDER IT AND WE ALL GOT
OUT. SOME KIDS WERE FREAKING OUT, BUT
WE MANAGED TO LIFT UP THE VAN JUST
ENOUGH SO WE COULD PULL OUT THE GUYS.

(END SOT)

Players in the second van were
relatively uninjured and they rushed to
help their teammates who'd been badly
hurt.

A total of 13 people were sent to
the hospital, including, reports say,
eight team members, coach John Westfall
and his two children.

Liberty University immediately
dispatched a dean and two of its
pastors in the school jet to Mobile ...
they'll stay there for the next few
days to help the students cope with the
tragedy.

WE'VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF PRAYING. UH
WE'VE BEEN GETTING TOGETHER AND
TALKING. THESE GUYS ARE GREAT BUNCH OF
GUYS, THEY'VE BEEN REALLY STRONG,
DURING THIS WHOLE THING, AND REALLY
ENCOURAGING THE OTHER GUYS. Steve
