Around 12:30, crews were called to the
Liberty Baptist Church on Route 750,
just off Route 29.

A single-story home next to the church
was engulfed in flames ... and there
was little firefighters could do to
save it.

About two dozen firefighters spent

Bridge yesterday afternoon.

VO-NAT VO-NAT

Witnesses say they saw the man
approach the railing and dive over it
headfirst without hesitation.

He fell about 150 feet to the
ground below but is still alive.

Police have identified him as
36-year-old Paul Passalacqua
(pass-uh-LAH-kwuh) who lived in an
apartment a few hundred yards away from
the bridge.

Passalacqua suffered multiple
injuries in the fall and has been
transferred to the U-V-A Medical
Center.

The bridge has been the site of
numerous suicide attempts over the
years, and activists have lobbied the
city to raise the height of the railing
to make it more difficult for someone

to jump or fall off.
