If you were riding down
Hershberger Road near the Roanoke
county line Saturday night, you might

have seen the commotion outside the
Star City Skate and Play.

According to management, fights
broke out around 10:30.

L.B. KITTS:IT WAS NOT JUST ONE OR TWO
IT WAS PROBABLY LIKE SIX OR SEVEN GOING
ON AT ONE TIME, AND THAT IS WHEN WE
SAID NO, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, AND CALLED
THE POLICE.

Two Roanoke County officers
responded around eleven o'clock and by
midnight there were dozens of officers
trying to break up multiple fights.

SGT. MARK CROMER:THE FIRST TWO OFFICERS
THAT ARRIVED ON THE SCENE WERE
ASSAULTED THEMSELVES AND SUBSEQUENTLY
WERE INJURED, NOT SERIOUSLY BUT
INJURED.

At least one officer used pepper
spray to break up fight involving
another officer.

Officials and teenagers who were
there say it only took a couple of kids
out of the huge crowd to ruin the
night.

TEENAGERS:IT WAS SOMETHING SMALL THAT
JUST TURNED TO BIG ALL BECAUSE A COUPLE
PEOPLE WANTED TO FIGHT, FOR NO REASON.

Kitts says the promotions company

that rents out the skating rink has put
this event on since October, without
any problems.

But previous parties were
restricted to middle and elementary
school children.

Last night's party was the first
with high school students.

L.B.KITTS:HA HA, NEVER AGAIN. IF I DO
ANOTHER ONE I'LL PUT A CAP ON IT AND
ONLY LET LIKE 300 KIDS IN AND IT WILL
ONLY BE ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL.
THERE WILL BE NO HIGH SCHOOL KIDS AT
ALL.

BUTT BUTT BUTT

JEREMY BUTTERFIELD:KITTS SAYS HE HATES
TO ELIMINATE HIGH SCHOOL KIDS
ALTOGETHER FROM THESE FUNCTIONS, BUT HE
JUST CAN'T HANDLE ANOTHER NIGHT OF
FIGHTING. POLICE SAY THEY HAVE
RESPONDED TO CALLS AT THE SKATE AND
PLAY BEFORE, BUT NOT TO ANYTHING THIS
SERIOUS. THEY SAY CHARGES AGAINST SOME
JUVENILES INVOLVED ARE PENDING, BUT NO
ARRESTS WILL BE MADE UNTIL THE
INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE. JEREMY
