living facility who *contracted Group-A
Streptococcus* has died.

The resident was of one of FOUR
people who was infected with a severe
form of the illness. Thirteen others
were also diagnosed with the bacterium.

In tonight's Healthcheck 7 Report,
Joy Sutton spoke with the daughter of
*another* Lakeview resident -- who had
her leg amputated because of this.

The first case of Group A
Streptococcus showed up at Lakeview in
January --but Frances Townley wasn't
diagnosed until this month.

News 7 talked with her daughter
Teresa Shelton by phone. She told us no
one knows how her mother contracted the
bacterium --but it almost claimed her
life.

IT WAS VERY TOUCH AND GO SITUATION THE
DOCTORS TOLD ME THEY WERE SURPASSED SHE
ACTUALLY LIVED. HER CONDITIONS WAS VERY
SEVERE BECAUSE THEY TOLD ME IT HAD
ATTACKED HER MUSCLE TISSUES IN HER LEG.
THEY BASICALLY HAD TO AMPUTATE HER LEG
IN ORDER TO SAVE HER LIFE

But the majority of residents who
contracted the bacterium didn't have
any symptoms. That's because there a
varying degrees of infection,

a person can have no illness at all and
just be a carrier, mild illness such as
strep throat, or severe illness --where
the the bacteria destroys tissue and
causes organ failure.

Thursday News 7 spoke with the CEO of
the facility which is part of
Friendship Retirement Community. He
told us that as that day that all
residents and staff were tested --and
those who had the bacterium were given
antibiotics. After 24 hours of taking
the medication they are no longer
contagious.

GRAPHIC=Shooting Lynchburg police arrested a man who


they say attacked an officer early this
morning.

Police say 19- year- old Blake Thomas
Robert Roach fled the scene after they
tried to arrest him on drug related
charges.

The incident happened in the parking
lot of the I-Hop on Fort Avenue.

Officials say he *resisted* arrest, got
in a car and hit an officer with his
vehicle as he drove off.

That's when officers opened fire.

Roach managed to escape. He was later
admitted to Lynchburg General Hospital
for *a non-life threatening gun shot
wound* to his right arm.

arrested a North Carolina man wanted
for kidnapping a 15-year old girl.

After receiving a tip from a local
citizen, and a brief stand off
--deputies arrested Jose Burel and
found the missing teen.

The teen from Burlington, North
Carolina was reported missing last
*Monday.*

Halifax deputies took the teen back to
her home in North Carolina.

Burel is in the Halifax County jail
under no bond -- pending an extradition
hearing.

victims of this week's school shootings

in Red Lake, Minnesota.



Today, services were held for the
suspected shooter's grandfather and the
man's companion -- and a 15-year-old
boy.

Jeff Weise Wees is blamed for nine
deaths on the reservation, including
seven at his high school.

He later took his own life.

Family members say Weise's Prozac
dosage had recently been

increased to 60-milligrams a day.

An aunt tells The New York Times the
higher dosage "must have set him off."

into a buzz saw in the regioanl semis,
the LSU Tigers--a team that was number
one in the country for most of the
season.

of Liberty turnovers.

this jumper to go down for the Flames
along the baseline, but LSU led by 30

In the second half, Liberty tried
to make a game of it. Fasnacht sticks

Kevin Pittsnogle scored 25 points
for WVU, and the Mountaineers led deep
into the second half.

With Francisco Garcia on the
bench after fouling out, the Cards
rallied.

Larry O'Bannon got to the rim
in the final minute to tie things at
77. O'Bannon finished with 24 points
of his own.

Both teams had a chance to win
it in regulation. First, JD Collins had
his shot blocked in the lane. Then at
the other end, Taquan Dean missed along
