EVENT=HEALTH CHECK 7 BANNER
Four people at the Lakeview
assisted living home have been infected
with the serious form of bacteria that
causes strep throat and flesh eating
bacteria.
Now health officials are
confirming that at least one person has
died.
In this Health Check 7 report,
the daughter of "another" Lakeview
resident- who had her leg amputated
because of the illness- speaks to Joy
Sutton.

Streptococcus showed up at Lakeview in
January --but Frances Townley wasn't
diagnosed until this month.
News 7 talked with her daughter
Teresa Shelton by phone. She told us no
one knows how her mother contracted the
bacterium --but it almost claimed her
life.

IT WAS VERY TOUCH AND GO SITUATION THE
DOCTORS TOLD ME THEY WERE SURPASSED SHE
ACTUALLY LIVED. HER CONDITIONS WAS VERY
SEVERE BECAUSE THEY TOLD ME IT HAD
ATTACKED HER MUSCLE TISSUES IN HER LEG.
THEY BASICALLY HAD TO AMPUTATE HER LEG
IN ORDER TO SAVE HER LIFE

But the majority of residents who
contracted the bacterium didn't have
any symptoms. That's because there a
varying degrees of infection,

a person can have no illness at all and
just be a carrier, mild illness such as
strep throat, or severe illness --where
the the bacteria destroys tissue and
causes organ failure.

Thursday News 7 spoke with the CEO of
the facility which is part of
Friendship Retirement Community. He
told us that as that day that all
residents and staff were tested --and
those who had the bacterium were given
antibiotics. After 24 hours of taking
the medication they are no longer
contagious.

a North Carolina man wanted for
kidnapping a 15 year old girl.

After receiving a tip from a
local citizen, and a brief stand off
--deputies arrested Jose Burel and
found the missing teen.
The teen -- from Burlington,
North Carolina -- was reported missing
last *Monday.*
Halifax deputies took the teen
back to her home in North Carolina.
Burel is held without bond in the
Halifax County jail -- pending an
extradition hearing.

today, appearing at his window for
several minutes and even attempting to
say a few words.

Because of his illness, it was
the first time the pope did not lead
Easter Mass, but that did not keep the
tens of thousands from gathering in
Saint Peter's Square to mark the most
joyous day in the Christian calendar,

blessing, with the words actually being
read for him- though he did attempt to
say a few words in barely a whisper.

In Jerusalem -- hundreds of
pilgrims and Christians gathered at the
Garden Tomb to celebrate Easter.
The Easter service underlined one
of Christianity's main doctrinal
differences- Catholics and Orthodox
Christians believe Jesus was buried in
the Holy Sepulchre in the old city of
Jerusalem.
While, most Protestants regard
the Garden as the true site of Jesus'
tomb, which the disciples discovered
was empty, fulfilling Jesus' own
prophecy that he would rise from the
dead.

An engineering firm said the
stadium's brick facade was in danger of
crumbling.
City officials decided the civic

But Fernando Vargas made it look
easy in his return last night, fighting
Raymond Joval of the Netherlands.
The two-time former junior-middle
weight champ - pounded a cut on Joval's
right eye all night.
It looked like Vargas wouldn't
even be hit much -- until the ninth
round when Joval sent him a below the
belt hit, unseen by the ref.
That allowed him to get in a
quick flurry as Vargas doubled up --
but it wasn't enough.
Vargas takes the unanimous
decision in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Dr. David Crouse says there a new
option in the Roanoke Valley for people
who suffer from conductive hearing loss
or single sided deafness --it's called
the baha system.

about three weeks to heal and for the
device to become part of the bone.
Then it's strong enough to serve as

component. That component can be
removed at leisure and the volume can
be turned up or down based on the
patients needs.

One staff member says one of the
biggest changes this year is the new

ENG#=3 the residents at Lakeview Assisted
Living Facility, who *contracted
Group-A Streptococcus* strep toe coccus
-has died.
That's the same bacteria that
causes strep throat AND is known as the
flesh eating virus.
The resident was of one of FOUR
people infected with the severe form of
the illness. Thirteen others were
also diagnosed.
In this Healthcheck 7 Report, Joy
Sutton speaks with the daughter of
*another* Lakeview resident -- who had
her leg amputated because of the
bacteria.

Streptococcus showed up at Lakeview in
January --but Frances Townley wasn't
diagnosed until this month.
News 7 talked with her daughter
Teresa Shelton by phone. She told us no
one knows how her mother contracted the
bacterium --but it almost claimed her
life.

IT WAS VERY TOUCH AND GO SITUATION THE
DOCTORS TOLD ME THEY WERE SURPASSED SHE
ACTUALLY LIVED. HER CONDITIONS WAS VERY
SEVERE BECAUSE THEY TOLD ME IT HAD
ATTACKED HER MUSCLE TISSUES IN HER LEG.
THEY BASICALLY HAD TO AMPUTATE HER LEG
IN ORDER TO SAVE HER LIFE

But the majority of residents who
contracted the bacterium didn't have
any symptoms. That's because there a
varying degrees of infection,

a person can have no illness at all and
just be a carrier, mild illness such as
strep throat, or severe illness --where
the the bacteria destroys tissue and
causes organ failure.

Thursday News 7 spoke with the CEO of
the facility which is part of
Friendship Retirement Community. He
told us that as that day that all
residents and staff were tested --and
those who had the bacterium were given
antibiotics. After 24 hours of taking
the medication they are no longer
contagious.

kidnapping a 15 year old girl is in
jail this morning.

local citizen, and a brief stand off
--Halifax County Sheriff's deputies
arrested Jose Burel -- and found the
missing teen.
The teen -- from Burlington,
North Carolina -- was reported missing
last *Monday.*
Halifax deputies took the teen
back to her home in North Carolina.
Burel is held without bond at the
Halifax County jail -- pending an
extradition hearing.
