Sacred

College of Cardinals will gather to
perform their most important

function - the

election of a new pope.

The ceremony is secret, the cardinals
segregated: They are forbidden to

make

phone calls, receive mail, read
newspapers or watch TV. They even

disguise

their handwriting when voting and take
repeated vows of silence.

All this to prevent anything from
influencing the decision.

(SOT) MARK LEWIS, JESUIT HISTORIAN

"The idea was that once they got within
the walls of the conclave they

could be

people of God and so vote for the best
candidate and not be beholden to

someone

outside."

(TRACK)

The cardinal electors vote twice in the
morning and twice in the

afternoon.

Then the ballots are burned in the
chimney of the Sistine Chapel. For

those

waiting in St. Peter's Square, black
smoke means no decision has been

reached.

White smoke means a new Pontiff has
been chosen.

(STAND UP) MANUEL GALLEGUS REPORTING)

The cardinals are housed here at the
hotel-like Domus Santa Marta. It's

just a

short walk from the Sistine Chapel.
It's a welcome improvement from past

accommodations since the Cardinals will
be settling in for what could be

one of

the longest conclaves in centuries.

(TRACK)

John Paul II changed the rules. It
used to take two-thirds majority.

But

after the Cardinals vote 30 times, they
can now elect a pope by a simple

majorityas long as it all happens
within 12 days. Some say this makes

the

process even more difficult, since the
cardinals could sit out the first

thirty

votes - then elect who they want, with
far fewer votes than before.

But defenders say the change ensures a
quick transition.

(SOT) MARK LEWIS, JESUIT HISTORIAN

"By legislating it, it prevents the
problem from going 50 days, 100

days. Who

knows how long a conclave would last if
there was a true deadlock? Back

in the

middle ages, it took almost 3 years to
elect Pope Gregory X. Luckily,

in modern

times, long conclaves are quite rare.
Since 1831, none have lasted

longer than

four days."

(TRACK)

Whatever the outcome, it will be a
difficult decision, and one millions

of

Catholics will be watching. Manuel

The name of Dave Odom came up
many times.

:00 Odom is now 62 years old, said
last night he's still under contract at
South Carolina and that he has no type
of formal discussions about the UVa
job.

While many of you may remember

him as the ACC coach of the year who
had Tim Duncan on his team, longtime
UVa fans know he's more than that. *CG locator Charlottesville
1987 From 1982 through 1989 he was an
assistant coach at UVa under his
longtime friend and former boss Terry
Holland.

One of his fellow assistants on
that staff was none other than Craig
Littlepage - UVa's current athletic
director.

GRAPHIC=BRISTOL The Busch series drivers made up
ENG#=4 a rain day down in Bristol.

VO-NAT VO-NAT

*CG locator Bristol, TN
Fox The race featured a record three :00 red flags that stopped the event for
lenghty periods and and a record-tying
14 yellow cautions.

One of those came out with under
five laps to go as Shane Hmiel spun out
veteran Dale Jarrett.

After his car was stopped -

Jarrett made a point to explain to the
young Mister Hmiel that's not how you
drive. Hmiel likely will get
suspended or fined for an obscene
gesture.

Kevin Harvick avoided all of that
mess to win the rain-delayed Sharpie
Professional 250.

Harvick came from 38th and held
off teammate Jeff Burton for the win.
