History Professor Fred

researching papal elections.

In 2003 he wrote a book about the
process called Behind Locked Doors: A
History of Papal Elections

He says Pope John Paul the second
made two major changes to the conclave
that could add to the drama.

This year cardinals will not be
locked in cells in the Vatican and
members can eventually switch to a
simple majority if no one can get a two
thirds majority vote.

The study says doing so could create

Renovation would cost more than 47
