Baumgartner spent several years
researching papal elections.
In 2003 he wrote a book about the
process called Behind Locked Doors: A
History of Papal Elections
He says Pope John Paul the second
made two major changes to the conclave
that could add to the drama.
This year cardinals will not be
locked in cells in the Vatican and
members can eventually switch to a
simple majority if no one can get a two
thirds majority vote.

Danville to split from its Baptist
roots.

The board of the Baptist General
Association of Virginia voted yesterday
to cut its ties with the school after a
145-year history.
The move follows a "Gay Pride
Week" organized by a student group in
February.
Averett's president says both
sides agreed that the affiliation
should be discontinued, but says there
were no regrets about allowing the
Gay-Straight Student Alliance to hold
its event.

A feasibility study released
yesterday says it would be unwise to
add on to the current jail site in
downtown Salem.
The study says doing so could create
flooding problems and would be too
costly.
Renovation would cost more than 47
million while a new jail would cost
more than 88 million.
But the study says the county would
save more than 2 million dollars a year
simply by eliminating 50 positions with
a new jail.

Pulaski County High School has
bacterial or

parents not to panic.

serious form of the illness and can be
fatal or cause brain damage.

The illness is NOT easily spread

a house fire in February.

Katie Bowyer (Boy-yer) is being
treated for severe burns at a Hospital
in Ohio.
Her grandfather, Paul Bowyer,
died from injuries he recieved while
rescuing Katie from the fire.
Bowyer was a fixture in the
Blacksburg community.

to help the Bowyer family.
The Montgomery County students
are building benches, cabinets and
shelves to be auctioned.
The money would help rebuild the
family's home and pay for Katie's

school football will be played in
Victory Stadium this fall.
So backup plans are in the works.

ENG#=3 an element to the debate over Victory
Stadium.

Without intending to take a
position on the controversy,
Fitzpatrick wanted to produce a lasting
image of the stadium in its glory days.
He spent a month working on it,
with various developments, permutations
and evolutions along the way.
After a few dry runs, the artist
says he's satisfied with the final
watercolor.
