Two well known armies gathered in

PICTURE FOR THE PUBLIC AS TO WHAT LIFE
WAS LIKE AND WHAT FIGHTING WAS LIKE IN

THOSE DAYS IN THE VICTORIA ERA. SO WE
ARE REALLY A LIVING HISTORY
ORGANIZATION.

Thousands of re-enactors and even
more spectators came together to
remember the 140th anniversary of the
Confederate army's surrender to Union
forces.

For the re-enactors, events like
this one give them the opportunity to
dive head first into history.

LOT OF PRACTICES. THE HORSES HAVE TO BE
GROOMED TO DO THAT. SO REALLY IT IS A
CONTINUOS PROCESS TO GET READY
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO GET READY FOR
EVENTS.

JEREMY BUTTERFIELD:THE RE-ENACTMENT IS
ABOUT THE HISTORY BUT THERE IS ALSO A
CERTAIN AMOUNT OF PRIDE THAT IS
INVOLVED WITH THE EVENT. A GOOD MANY
CONFEDERATE AND UNION REENACTORS HAD
ANCESTORS THAT FOUGHT IN THE CIVIL WAR.

BUTT BUTT BUTT

GARY MITCHELLOH LOTS OF PRIDE LOTS OF
PRIDE, LOTS OF WORK IN THIS STUFF, LOTS
OF PRIDE. WE REPRESENT WHAT WAS AN
ELLITE GROUP OF PEOPLE BACK THAN.

And just because it has been
nearly two hundred years since the
civil war ended, don't think there
isn't some remaining animosity between
the yankees and the rebels.

DAN LINGLE:I FEEL THAT THE BATTLE
ESPECIALLY ON THE PART OF THE
CONFEDERATE FORCES IS STILL GOING ON
SIR.

BUTT BUTT BUTT

GARY MITCHELL:IF I WERE FROM A NORTHERN
STATE OR HAD A NORTHERN ANCESTOR I
WOULD BE JUST AS GLAD TO DO THAT AND I
HOPE I WOULD BE A THOROUGHLY DESPICABLE
YANKEE LIKE THEY WERE, OH BUT YOU MIGHT
WANT TO CUT THAT.

It's been almost two centuries
now since Lee's surrender to Grant, and
still Civil War re-enactors around the
country refuse to surrender the history
and culture that shaped America.

01:21:54 MIKE SMITH:WHAT WAS A
WORKING RAILROAD TRACK EIGHT DAYS AGO
IS NOW A HUGE WIDE ROAD BACK THERE.

And that won't be the only change
fans will see.

01:22:15 MIKE SMITH:WE HAD A FIFTEEN
FOOT FENCE WE'VE GONE NOW WITH

SOMETHING NEW THAT IS TWENTY-ONE FEET
HIGH WITH ALMOST TWELVE MILES OF
CABLING AROUND IT. ULTRA SAFE, STATE OF
THE ART, STATE OF THE INDUSTRY FENCE.

This will be the second race
weekend at the Martinsville Speedway
since it was bought by the
International Speedway Corporation, the
same group that owns some big names
like Daytona, Taladaga, and the
Darlington Raceway.

Along with the new ownership,
comes new security.

01:24:06 MIKE SMITH:WE WANT TO BE
ABLE TO SEARCH EVERY BAG, EVERY COOLER
THAT IS BROUGHT IN. WITH SMALLER
COOLERS THAT IS SO MUCH EASIER TO DO.

The smaller cooler size means
fans won't be able to bring in as many
as their own drinks, however this will
be the first year that beer will be
sold in the stands.

Smith says security may have
changed, but fans will still be able to
bring the necessities.

01:23:32 MIKE SMITH:YOU CAN STILL
BRING IN YOUR BINOCULARS CASE, YOUR
SCANNER CASE, THAT SORT OF THING BUT
YOU NEED TO HAVE THEM HANGING AROUND

YOUR NECK OR OFF YOUR BELT OR SOMETHING
LIKE THAT. *CG live Martinsville
