OQ=SA, CBSN, NY < (END SOT) drivers are now looking to Hybrids in

record numbers. 88-thousand hybrids
were sold in the US last year.

This year, that number is expected to
more than double.

---.

(JACK NERAD/KELLY BLUE BOOK) IT'S
AMAZING HOW RAPIDLY PEOPLE HAVE

ADOPTED THIS TECHNOLOGY.

---.

Good news if you "have" a hybrid to
sell. But, GM, America's

largest automaker doesn't have a single
Hybrid on the market.

---.

(BRAD BERMAN/EDITOR HYBRIDCARS.COM )
THE JAPANESE ARE WAY AHEAD IN

TERMS OF HYBRIDS, THE AMERICANS HAVE
JUST FALLEN BEHIND.

---.

(GRAPHIC HERE) And so have their
profits. In the last two months,

GM sales have fallen nearly 10 percent
and it's market share hit a

record low. Ford's been losing it's
market share-- EVERY month for the

last two years...while rivals Toyota,
Nissan, BMW and Hyundai are

picking up those buyers.

---.

Analysts say it's all a symptom of a
broader problem. They say

American car makers are out of touch
with consumers--- pushing trucks

and SUV's even as gas prices
sky-rocketed.

---.

(BERMAN) THERE'S A KNEE JERK REACTION

FROM THE PUBLIC WHEN THEY START

PAYING MORE AT THE PUMP, THEY START
RUSHING OUT TO THINK ABOUT HOW THEY

CAN REDUCE THOSE COSTS AND THE LOGICAL
THING IS FOR THEM TO CONSIDER A

HYBRID CAR.

---.

GM says it will have a hybrid out by
the end of the year. Ford is

offering an Escape Hybrid... but
they'll only produce 20-thousand this

year.

(BB) THEY'RE BOTH HAVING TO PLAY CATCH
UP. GM SAID IT'S BUSINESS CASED

IT AND SAID THERE WAS NO ECONOMIC OR
ENVIRONMENTAL REASON TO GO WITH

HYBRIDS AND NOW THEY'RE REVERSING THAT
POSITION AND THEY SAY THEY'VE

MISSED THE BOAT.
