Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of
Germany was today elected on the fourth
vote of the papal conclave.

The 78-year old chose the name
Benedict the 16th.

He has a reputation as a staunch
conservative and has been labeled by
some as 'God's Rotweiller.

He has spent most of his life as
a scholar, but as a teen marched
briefly as a soldier in the Nazi army.

The Vatican says Benedict was
called by Germany into anti-aircraft

service during the last months of World
War Two.

He deserted his unit and was
taken prisoner by U-S troops.

determine the cause of a brush fire

today on Catawba Mountain.

fire around 3:30 this afternoon near
Beckner Gap.

A helicopter was able to quickly put
it out -- although officials say the
rain also helped.

board voted unanimously to reconfigure
its elementary grade levels.

That means, starting in the fall of
2006, there will only be TWO elementary
schools, with grades Kindergarten
through five.

Right now, the three elementary

Officials say the new system will
give students more stability and help

morning on Trinity Road -- in the same

V-Dot says this hole is about
35-feet deep-- almost as big as the
other one, and that the two are
related.

Route 670 was closed while crews

Officials say sinkholes of such
size, especially back to back, are

have taken the Destination Imagination
competition by storm ... winning the
state championship in their category
last weekend.

first got started, her only goal was
for the girls to come up with a design
for the car. She never dreamed they
could actually build it and then win a

regional and state competition. Now
Monelison is ready to make national
headlines.

In May, the girls will head to

competition ... they'll have eight
minutes to complete ten tasks and as
many laps as they can with the car.

They're confident, energized ...
and they've got something to prove.

use, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue
signed a bill today requiring that
Sudafed and similar cold and sinus

medications to be sold behind store
counters.

pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient used
in making meth.

Under the new law beginning July
first, customers will have to ask
pharmacists and store clerks for the
medicine.

The law also bars retailers from
selling more than three packages at a

The move comes just one day after
Target announced it will no longer sell
medicines containing pseudoephedrine at
stores that don't have pharmacies.

Stores with pharmacies will sell the
medicine over the counter.

Police identified 70-year-old
Joseph Anthony Dapron (duh-PRONN) as a
suspect and executed a search warrant
at his Ridge Avenue home on April 11th.

That's where they reportedly found
large quantities of child pornography,
including photos featuring three
Lynchburg-area children.

Dapron now faces twenty counts of
possession of child porn ... more

of a toxic chemical were found on their

The initial testing was a check for
Toxaphene- an insecticide made at a
nearby plant and banned in 19-90.

No toxaphene was found, but there
were traces of another potentially
harmful substance called Polycyclic
Aromatic Hydrocarbons- usually a
byproduct of burning petroleum
products.

Testing are being conducted to
determine if the levels are high enough
to cause a health risk.

Until then, P-E classes and recess
will be held in the gym or at a nearby
public park.

that took place there more than 60
years ago.

An airplane dropped six boxes of
petals from a height of about a
thousand feet ... most of them
scattered in the breeze, but some could
be found drifting down on the historic
cemetery.

A similar event was held on
Memorial Day in 1941 ... officials say
they hope to do it all again next year
when the cemetery marks its 200th
birthday.

Washington Redskins said earlier in the
Day that they were not trading the 9th
overall pick in the N-F-L draft on
Saturday. They were true to their
word. Instead they traded their 3rd
round pick this year and their 1st and
4th round pick of 2006, for the Denver
Broncos 1st round selection this year,
which is the 25th overall pick. That
now gives the Skins 2 first round
