yesterday evening..

The mess was traced back to a
company called Novozymes, which
accidentally released a chemical into
the creek.

the tab for Roanoke's annual Fourth of
July celebration.

But there is one sticking point.

The Roanoke Times wants the city

GRAPHIC=Fire 4018 Fire crews will be back at work


this morning -- trying to put out a
forest fire that's already charred
about 50 acres in Franklin County.

The fire is on the north face of
Turkeycock Mountain, near the Henry
County border.

Operations were called off last
night because the helicopter being used

can't fly at night, and the steep
terrain made it too difficult for
firefighters.

Officials say it likely started
from a lightning strike during an
isolated thunderstorm yesterday.

No homes are in danger at this
time.

could legally define hunting across the
country for the first time.

Orion Sporting Group is suing
Nelson County after the board of
supervisors refused to allow a sport
shooting range on Orion's property near
Wingina win-JY-nuh.


Orion claims the denial violates
the constitutional right to hunt and
fish ... the county says it's a land
use issue, and that shooting clay
targets is "not" the same as hunting
live game.

The judge will visit the estate
tomorrow for a demonstration of both
bird, and target shooting.

GRAPHIC=Shooting Lynchburg Police say an overnight


shooting is believed to be
gang-related.

It happened shortly after
midnight in the 100 block of Federal
Street. A 15 year old is in custody,
charged with malicious wounding.

The 17 year old victim was shot
twice, and taken to Lynchburg General
Hospital. No word on his condition.

the death penalty for the murder of her
small child.

Andrea Petrosky choked and then tried
to drown her six year old son last
Friday.

The child died Tuesday night.

A prosecutor in Bristol says
he'll charge Petrosky with capital
murder.

The family lived on Stanley
Avenue in South Roanoke until about a
year and a half ago.

Authorities say the owner of the
home shot ONE of the intruders --
25-year-old Timothy Myers of Danville
--in the head.

says she first thought it was a dream.

from police leaves a man in the
hospital.

Police in Roanoke County were
trying to arrest the man for probation
violation as he sat in a car on
Franklin Road.

A woman who was driving -- and
her baby were removed from the vehicle
unharmed.

That's when authorities turned
their attention to James Earl Williams,
Jr. who was in the front passenger seat
of this black Hyundai.

Williams was about to be arrested

and had his hands on the car- when
police say he spun around, threw
himself over the side of a bridge and
then tried to catch himself to keep
from dropping more than 45-feet.
