her husband, Derico Jermon Saunders,
abducted her from a home in Roanoke
yesterday.
Saunders took the woman to a
hospital, and she called police.
The 33-year-old man is charged

woman with drowning her baby in a
bathtub.
A police spokesman says 26-year-old
Roxanne Downs was charged
with murder following the death of her
daughter, Sarah Michelle Downs.
The baby's age was not immediately
available, but police said
she was less than one year old.
Police and rescue workers were
called to the home Tuesday evening and
found the baby unconscious.
She was pronounced dead about an
hour later at a local hospital.
Amos says that investigators
initially thought the drowning was
accidental, but filed charges against
Downs after talking with her.
Police did not release a motive.

shooting is believed to be
gang-related.
It happened shortly after
midnight in the 100 block of Federal
Street. A 15 year old is in custody,
charged with malicious wounding.
The 17 year old victim was shot
twice, and taken to Lynchburg General
Hospital. No word on his condition.

any of its Acelas up and running again
until summer.
It's another setback in restoring
Acela Express service to the railroad's
Northeast Corridor after brake problems
were discovered.
Officials said the trains will
resume service once replacement brake
parts
are retrofitted onto the trains.
Amtrak pulled all of its 20 Acela
trains out of service last Friday after
finding millimeter-size cracks in 20
percent of the fleet's disc brake
rotors.

Montgomery County.
The board of supervisors decided
not to increase the real estate tax
last night.
Members were considering up to a
five cent increase but decided to keep
the tax at 67 cents per 100-dollars of
assessed value.
The county will also give an
additional 600-thousand to schools, to
help with a proposed salary increase
for teachers.
Under the approved budget,
educators would receive a 3-point-5
percent raise.
