OQ=Mark Strassman, CBS News, Atlanta. < (END SOT) murder touched a nerve.

They were appalled by the nine
year-old's kidnap, rape and
murder....and new crime scene details
suggesting she may have been buried
alive.

And outraged that the suspect, John
Cooey, was a convicted sex offender who
had changed addresses, but never
notified the state as required by law.

So now Florida's legislature has passed
new get-tough legislation, and Governor
Jeb Bush soon is expected to sign it
into law.

Called the "Jessica Lunsford Act," it
would make sexual predators of children
stay in prison longer, and when freed,
demand they wear ankle bracelets to
track their movements for LIFE.

(SOT) (Nancy Argenziano - Florida State

Senator) "we're not gonna tolerate it

anymore. Zero tolerance. You're either
gonna get the death penalty, you're
either gonna live the rest of your life
in our prisons and it's not gonna be
fun, or you're gonna stay there in a
minimum of 25 years."

If Martha Stewart has to wear an ankle
bracelet, the argument goes, than why
not known sexual predators who target
children?

Sheriff Jeff Dawsey investigated the
Lunsford murder

(SOT) (Sheriff Jeff Dawsey - Citrus Co.

(FL.) "i'm very, very happy with this.
This is a step in the right direction
it's holding people accountable. It may
actually scare some offenders and
predators from coming into Florida, and
I think that's really what we're aiming
for."

Mark Lunsford, Jesssica's father, was
in Washington this week, lobbying
Congress to toughen federal standards
for sexual offenders.

(SOT Mark Lunsford/Jessica Lunsford's

father) "She was more than just a
daughter to me, she was my best
friend."

But back in Florida, some neighborhoods

are taking their own action.

In Orlando, a convicted sex offender
killed himself on Thursday, after
neighbors posted warning signs calling
him a "child rapist." Clovis Claxton
was found dead next to one of the
signs, and even the local sheriff
warned against hysteria.

But clearly in Florida, shock from the
Lunsford killing is still fresh. And
people are now taking steps to prevent
a repeat of such a wrenching crime.
