Drivers on Route 29 in
Pittsylvania County are showing up for
work late this morning, while some
families are evacuated from their
homes.

A nearly three mile stretch of
the road from Gretna halfway to
Chattham, is shut down because of an
accident involving a tractor trailer
carrying hazardous material.

The NORTHBOUND lanes are closed
from Route 40 to Old Mine Road.

Bedford County say they want police to
upgrade the charges against the alleged
shooter.

Police arrested 35 year old

Derrick Martin after a three hour
search on Saturday.

They say he shot Charles Spinner,
Junior three times in the stomach.

Martin is held at the Bedford
Adult Detention Center, charged with
malicous wounding and use of a firearm
to commit a felony.

Spinners' family says he was shot
more than three times, and think Martin
should be charged with attempted
murder. Spinner is in stable condition
this morning.

Police say the charges could be
upgraded.

woke up to the smell of natural gas
yesterday morning.

A third-party contractor was
drilling off of Dillard Road in the
Madison Heights section of the county,

when he struck a gas line just before
nine o'clock.

Two local businesses were
affected -- O'Neil Steel and Quality
Foods.

Officials say neither business
was open, but the Quality Foods
building had to be ventilated.

A *spokesman* for Columbia Gas of
Virginia says workers were able to make
the area safe again just after ten
o'clock.
