Act.

office, D-J Cooper discharged raw
sewage and other pollutants from the
Hardy Road Trailer Park into Sandy
Creek, which then flows into the
Roanoke River and Smith Mountain Lake.

The jury acquitted Cooper on three
of the charges.

not be executed.

1997 Percy Levar Walton ultimately
pled guilty to a double homicide in
Danville seven and a half years ago.

A federal judge in Roanoke heard
evidence of Walton's mental capacity,
but Judge Sam Wilson cleared the way
for Walton's execution.

Yesterday, a federal appeals
court overturned Judge Wilson's
decision and sent the case back to him
to consider what the court cites as
"Walton's 'limitations in adaptive
behavior' before age 18."

shuts down both the north and south
bound lanes of Interstate 581 in
Roanoke.

It happened around four o'clock
yesterday near the Valley View
Boulevard exit.

State Police say a pickup truck
heading north hit one vehicle, then
crossed the median and hit three more
on the southbound side.

In all, five vehicles were
involved.

Four people ended up in the
hospital.

None of the injuries appear life
threatening.

State Police are investigating
whether the pickup driver from
Bridgewater had a medical condition
which may have led to the accident.

Vinton's Dogwood Festival hasn't quite
bloomed -- thanks to the weather.

The Dogwood Festival is usually a
four day event, this year it is nine
days.

So far, events have included a
nightly carnival at the Roanoke County
Career Center and live entertainment.

People have shown up but NOT in
the large numbers organizers had hoped.

is the main attraction.

On Saturday, more than forty
thousand people are expected for the
parade in downtown Vinton.

For the fiftieth anniversary,
there will be more bands, floats, and
for the first time giant helium
balloons.

people have been the parade's marshals,
including Steve McQueen, Minnie Pearl,

Walton's.

This year, 28 former presidents
of the Dogwood Festival will be the
grand marshals.

school are hoping to send a message to
their peers about prom weekend.

and removed students to show how many
teenagers are killed in alcohol related
accidents- and how crucial it is to
wear a seatbelt.

Their t-shirts cited some scary

statistics on the back.

79 teenagers were killed in
Virginia in alcohol related accidents
in 2001.

36 Virginia teens who died in
crashes were not wearing seatlbelts.

scene of a train derailment in Radford.

But people living nearby say
that's not the only problem they've
been having.

The eight car train toppled over
yesterday around 4 o-clock on a
industrial track in the west end of
town.

Fire officials say it happened
while crews were unloading salt.

In all five cars are on there
side, a few of them still teetered
against a tree.

Crews roped off the scene and
alerted neighbors at a nearby
apartment complex and church to the
situation.

But neighbors say they're more
upset about the big pile of uncovered
salt.

salt company based out of New York for

three years over the salt problem.
