may be trying to build a nuclear
weapon. This after Iran's top nuclear
negotiator said the country will begin
activities related to uranium
enrichment.

In low levels uranium enrichment can
used to fuel nuclear reactors for
generating electricity. But in higher
levels it suitable for atomic weapons.

Iran insists the program is peaceful.
The country has been under
international pressure to end all

was set to go on trial on Tuesday for
her role in the Abu Ghraid prisoner
abuse scandal.

That has now hanged --England has
decided to plead guilty to the charges
against her.

a possible 16-and-a-hald years in
prison, but her lawyers says her plea
reduces the maximum sentence to eleven
years.

Under the plea deal, England will
plead guilty to two counts of
conspiracy, four counts of maltreating
prisoners and one count of dereliction
of duty

mayor Carl Hutcherson's finances now
involves his colleagues on city
council.

Several council members told News7
yesterday they were called in to the
city attorney's office Tuesday and
handed subpoenas to appear before a
federal grand jury.

In February, Hutcherson admitted
he is the target of a federal
investigation, reportedly involving a
32-thousand dollar loan he got from
Jerry Falwell Ministries.

Investigators want to know how
that money was spent, since it was
intended for a non-profit group that
never received tax-exempt status.

Campbell County administrator David
Laurell (low-RELL) also confirms he has
been subpoena'd.

They will appear in a federal court

in Roanoke on May 19th.

Salem, after Texas authorities failed
to show up at the his extradition
hearing.

Mandell Motley was relieved
yesterday, when the judge ruled his
bond would be lifted and the
extradition case dismissed.

Motley is wanted in Austin for
burglaries committed fifteen years ago.
However he believes the time he served
in California and Virginia for other
crimes should absolve the time he faces
in Texas.

NO Texas officials were present
yesterday because Motley was never in
official custody. According to a Salem
prosecutor, Texas refused to make the
trip to Virginia unless Motley was in

custody.

council.

handed subpoenas to appear before a
federal grand jury.

In February, Hutcherson admitted
he is the target of a federal
investigation, reportedly involving a

Investigators want to know how
that money was spent, since it was
intended for a non-profit group that
never received tax-exempt status.

Campbell County administrator David
Laurell (low-RELL) also confirms he has
been subpoena'd.

They will appear in a federal court

in March, but is still the highest in
Virginia.

The unemployment rate for the
area was seven-point-three percent last
month.

That's more than double that of
all other metropolitan areas, except
Lynchburg, which posted four percent
unemployment.

The Danville Metropolitan
statistical area includes the River
City and Pittsylvania County.

The city of Danville trailed
only Martinsville in unemployment among
the state's 134 jurisdictions.

weekend at Smith Mountain Lake. It's
the area's first cineplex.

Plans to build the cinema began a

Companies tried to find out what lake
residents wanted in their community.

edge over Verizon in the battle for the
right to buy MCI.

Qwest says more shareholders are in
its corner.

The company says shareholders owning
more than half of MCI's stock prefer
its' proposal over Verizon's.

Verizon has until Tuesday to raise
its bid.

1996 before a group of citizens banded
together to re-open it.

The auditorium was restored to the
way it looked when the theater was
first built in 1929.

These lanterns are reproductions but
the tapestries are originals.

Outside, the marquee has been

improvements to the facade.
