(LOCATOR: VERMONT)

In the serene state of Vermont where
the hills kiss the shores of Lake
Champlain and maple syrup oozes from
the landscape-there s a battle brewing
over brew and the age to drink it.

(NATSOUND IN BAR)

(LOCATOR: Bedford, QUEBEC)

Unlike its Canadian neighbors to the
north. whose bartenders legally serve
18-year-olds-Vermont---like the rest of

the United States has a drinking age
limit of 21.

(NATSOUND POOL BALLS BREAK)

Many-who are underage in this state,
readily admit they cross the border to
sip the suds.

(SOT: STUDENT NO SUPER)

HAVE YOU EVER GONE TO CANADA TO DRINK?

YES.

That's one reason lawmakers are
considering lowering the drinking age
HERE to 18.

The bill s booster is State
Representative Richard Marron.

Marron replays the argument old enough
to go to war and vote-old enough to
drink.

(STATE REP. RICHARD MARRON/(R) VERMONT)

I DO THINK WE'VE SET UP A DOUBLE
STANDARD OF CITIZENSHIP WITH TWO AGES
OF MAJORITY, ONE FOR DRINKING AND ONE
FOR EVERYTHING ELSE.

(STANDUP: DREW LEVINSON/WASHINGTON
COUNTY, VERMONT)

IF THIS BILL IS PASSED IT WOULD TAKE A
HEAVY TOLL ON VERMONT. UNDER FEDERAL
LAW, IF THE DRINKING AGE IS LOWERED,
THIS STATE WOULD LOSE NEARLY 10 MILLION
DOLLARS IN FEDERAL HIGHWAY FUNDS.

They'd have to make up the money
somehow...possibly at the pump-adding
to the gas tax. The idea of
18-year-olds drinking booze is getting

boos several organizations.

(SOT: BARBARA HARSHA/GOVERNORS HIGHWAY

SAFETY ASSOCIATION)

KIDS WILL DRINK YOUNGER, AND THEY'LL
GET INVOLVED IN CRASHES TO A GREATER
EXTENT.

Statistics back the claim that the
higher drinking age has saved tens of
thousands of lives.

And students believe if the legal age
is lowered-kids will start drinking
even earlier.

(SOT: RYAN LEAMY/STUDENT)

THE UNDERAGE DRINKING MIGHT BE MOVED
DOWN TO 15 YEAR OLDS AND 16 YEAR OLDS.

Whether the green Mountain state
becomes the first in the nation to let
18-year-olds belly up to the bar will
be up for debate-no doubt it will be a
SPIRITED debate.

instead of returning to the head
coaching ranks at Richmond.

Several sources told us that the
job was his for the taking.

Family may have been the
determining factor.

He and his wife have a 10th
grader, 8th grader and a 6th grader,
who have made two major cross country
