than a half million dollars narrowing
Grandin Road from Westover to Memorial
Avenue.

Attorney Gordon Hannet (HAN-net) is a
military police captain in the Army
Reserve, who is being called to active
duty.

As he prepares for a mission that
will take him to Iraq, he is also
fighting a judge's decision to replace
him at home.

He has hired a deputy to handle
prosecutions in his absence, and says
he will supervise the office through

A recent opinion from the

acting Commonwealth's Attorney.

moving through Congress becomes law.

House has passed a bill requiring all
states to strengthen their application
requirements.

Virginia upped its requirements
last year in an effort to keep
terrorists from getting state licenses,
but the federal law would affect all
Virginians... requiring you to renew
your license in person and show two
proofs of identification.

You'd have to prove you're in the
U-S legally, prove you're a Virginia
resident and show proof of your Social
Security number.

If the law passes, D-M-V
officials say they'll need more staff
to prevent long lines.

The prosecutor in Floyd County is
shipping out to Iraq -- but he's facing
a battle here at home as he packs his
duffle bags.

Gordon Hannett is a military
police captain in the Army Reserve, and
he will be mobilized with other members

of the 80th Division tomorrow.

This week, Circuit Court Judge
Ray Grubbs appointed a replacement,
even though Hannett says he doesn't
plan to step aside.

Joe Dashiell has more on the
dispute.

Roanoke County is taking measures to
ease the burden on taxpayers.

The county recently bought FOUR
hybrid cars.

They're being used by the real
estate assessment and social services
departments.

County officials say they're
already saving money on fuel.

The cars get 40 miles per gallon,
versus 25 in the older cars.

Officials also say the vehicles
will help cut environmental costs in
the long run.

They plan to add more hybrids to
the county's fleet this summer.

On May 6th 1960, the Norfolk &
Western Railway ran its last
steam-powered freight train.

Steam engines had plenty of
muscle, but the new diesel-electric
locomotives were cheaper to operate and
maintain.

The final steam run ended at
Williamson, West Virginia.

The N&W was the last main-line
railway in the nation to pull its
trains with steam.
