brush fire in Giles County.

The blaze broke out on Kire Lane off
of Route 635 near Big Stony Creek
yesterday evening.

The Pembroke Fire Department was
first on the scene.

The Forest Service and Regional
strike teams were later brought in.

Dispatchers say they all left the
scene around midnight.

No word on what started the fire.

still fighting to save his job after
being deployed for Iraq.

Now, attorneys in the county are
defending the circuit court judge who

appointed an acting attorney in his
place.

The situation developed after
county prosecutor Gordon Hannett was
called to active duty in the Army
Reserve.

He hired Christiansburg attorney
Dennis Nagel as his deputy to run the
office in his absence.

But Judge Ray Grubbs appointed Floyd
Attorney Stephanie Murray-Shortt as
acting commonwealth's attorney until
Hannett's return.

Yesterday, attorney Robert
Boswell said the judge was acting in
the best interests of the community,
when he moved to put a Floyd attorney
in the position.

campaign to save three-and a half-year
old Brownie.

Last week the dog was locked away

him up and deemed him dangerous after
he got loose and started barking at a
neighbor.

worrying less about where they'll find
the money to further their educations.

76 graduating seniors from
Roanoke County schools picked up almost
50-thousand dollars in scholarships
last night.

The Roanoke County Public
Schools Education Foundation handed the
awards out at William Byrd High School.

The organization's been
awarding scholarships since 1991 and
has given away nearly 400-thousand
dollars so far.

owned by a private company from out of
state.

sale of the hospital to LifePoint
Hospitals Incorporated out of Tennessee
... the final price was 210 million
dollars.

The hospital's board of directors
said it was getting harder for the
non-profit facility to stay competitive

LifePoint has the money to make
improvements to the facility.

getting help in its undercover
prostitution operation.

40-charges related to prostitution
since Operation Red Light began in
March.

But, a group of residents in
Southwest Roanoke has now organized its
own effort to crack down on
prostitution, through periodic "safety
walks."

Organizers believe the walks give
them a slight advantage over police.
