Crews are no longer battling a brush
fire in Giles County.

The blaze broke out on Kire Lane off
of Route 635 near Big Stony Creek
yesterday evening.

The Pembroke Fire Department was

first on the scene.

The Forest Service and Regional
strike teams were later brought in.

Dispatchers say they all left the
scene around midnight.

No word on what started the fire.

week of an undercover prostitution
operation, but the department is
getting some help.

Police have issued more than 40-charges
related to prostitution since Operation
Red Light began in March.

But, a group of residents in Southwest
Roanoke has now organized its own
effort to crack down on prostitution,
through periodic "safety walks."

Organizers believe the walks give them
a slight advantage over police.

continue their search a man who escaped
during a jail transfer Sunday night.

Sheriff's deputies were taking
Robert Wayne Grasty Junior to the
Pittsylvania County jail- when they say
he removed his leg cuffs and ran as the
deputy opened the car door.

Grasty is from Danville.

He is 32 years old- about 5
foot eight with the initials J-K-C
tattooed on his shoulder- and a scar on
his face.

Grasty was wearing handcuffs when
he fled.

Prosecutor.

But yesterday attorneys there defended
the circuit court judge who appointed
an acting commonwealth's attorney last
week.

The situation developed after county
prosecutor Gordon Hannett was called to
active duty in the Army Reserve.

He hired Christiansburg attorney Dennis
Nagel as his deputy to run the office
in his absence.

But Judge Ray Grubbs appointed Floyd
Attorney Stephanie Murray-Shortt as
acting commonwealth's attorney until
Hannett's return.

Yesterday, attorney Robert Boswell said
the judge was acting in the best
interests of the community, when he
moved to put a Floyd attorney in the
position.

Thursday evening, biting Nadya

Murphy is charged with violating

an unlicensed dog.

Murphy must also answer whether

operation, but the department is
getting some help.

Murphy is charged with violating

an unlicensed dog.

Murphy must also answer to
