after a shooting in Roanoke last night.

o-clock in the 34-hundred block of
Ferncliff Avenue.

Police say a 16 year old was
shot.

He was taken to Roanoke
Memorial Hospital with what are
described as non-life threatening
injuries.

Last week, an elderly woman was
beaten, raped and robbed in her home in
the 700 block of Leesville Road ... two
days earlier, another home just off
Leesville Road was burglarized at
gunpoint.

In both cases, the suspect
identified himself to his victims as
"Mad Max" ... now police hope an alert
neighborhood can provide them with some
important tips.

Salem could affect your EVENING
commute.

V-DOT says sometime between six
o-clock and eight o-clock this evening,
eastbound Route 460 traffic near the
intersection of Route 419 will be
stopped for approximately 20 minutes

while the overhead sign is installed.

Traffic turning from Route 419 to
eastbound route 460 will also be
stopped.

If you're heading to Blacksburg
this weekend, V-DOT has issued a
traffic alert in advance of graduation
ceremonies at Virginia Tech.

Traffic is expected to be
especially heavy on Interstate 81,
Route 11, Route 114 and Route 460.

It's recommended that all
travelers allow extra time to get to
their destinations.

Elliot Sadler to help make that happen.

The Virginia native is now the
official spokesman for the "Race to
G-E-D program" -- where people can get
a G-E-D in 90 days or less.

Introduced yesterday at Richmond
International Raceway, Sadler says many
people don't realize a G-E-D can double
their earning power.

Nearly 700- thousand Virginians
are without a high school diploma or
equivalent.

Governor Warner says continuing
education is especially important in
regions with changing economies like
Southside.

They called the authorities, who
told the couple they might want to
leave the house for a little while.

radiosonde, or weather balloon.

The instruments are released
twice a day from weather centers across
the nation and are only recovered two
percent of the time.

The forecast center in Blacksburg

trying to get the Virginia Department
of Transportation will stop cutting
back on the trees so much.

Residents along routes 624 and
625 signed a petition to keep VDOT and
its contractors from removing or
destroying any more trees.

The group says, by cutting the
trees, its lessening shade, air quality
and erosion control.

They're worried the area will
begin to look like route 42 - where
stumps and tree cuttings litter the
side of the road.

A VDOT spokesperson says the
department has a responsibility to the
public.

She says it must provide good
visibility and keep the roadways safe
from possible hazards.

these 40 acres.

The land cuts right through the
New River Trail State Park.

The developer plans to build a
bridge over the trail.
