Sunday From 05-11 @ 1:45:34
VDOT is scheduled to activate the new
stoplight this morning at Route 220 and
Bethlehem Road.
Many Boones Mill residents hope the
light will reduce the number of
accidents at the town's busiest
intersection, but others wonder if
might block traffic or hinder people
trying to pull out of local businesses.
The stoplight is supposed to begin
operation at nine a.m.

(END SOT) nothing new to southwest Virginia. What
is new is the way that we can warn you
about severe weather much sooner.
ROBIN: WHEN WE UPGRADED ALL OUR WEATHER
COMPUTERS THIS SPRING, WE DIDN'T WANT A
RADAR ANALYSIS SYSTEM BASED ON OLD
TECHNOLOGY, WE WANTED TO PURCHASE ONE
THAT IS NEWEST AND MOST ADVANCED.
That purchase is called TITAN.
It's not just a powerful name. It
stands for Thunderstorm Identification,
Tracking, and Nowcasting and it's
pushing the limits of technology.
Using National Weather Service
radar data, TITAN incorporates 4
Real-Time radars to provide the most
advanced look at approaching weather
long before it arrives in Southwest
Virginia.
BRENT STANDUP: TITAN USES
VOLUMETRIC RADAR TECHNOLOGY, WHICH
SIMPLY MEANS THAT EVERYTIME A SWEEP
GOES BY, A LAYER OF INFORMATION IS
UPDATED IN REAL-TIME ON YOUR SCREEN.
THE PROCESS CONTINUES THROUGHOUT EACH
LEVEL, PAINTING THE HIGHEST-QUALITY
THREE-DIMENSIONAL PICTURE OF DISRUPTIVE
WEATHER.
Timing and accuracy is crucial
when severe weather approaches. That's
why TITAN is equipped with early
warning storm markers which alert us of
storms containing hail, rotation, or
tornadoes. In addition, TITAN
indicates lightning data on your screen
in real-time.
LEO: THE GREAT THING ABOUT TITAN IS
THAT WE CAN PUT THE RADAR IN FORECAST
MODE TO SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN 6,12 EVEN
24 HOURS.
This summer, TITAN will take
street-level forecasting to a new
levelwith high-resolution mapping.
ROBIN:WE'RE EXCITED BECAUSE THIS
SUMMER, IF THERE'S A STORM MOVING CLOSE
TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WE CAN ACTUALLY
TAKE YOU DOWN TO SHOW YOU WHERE THE
STORM IS IN RELATION TO YOUR
NEIGHBORHOOD.
What this means is the clearest,
most accurate look at severe weather,
saving property and saving lives.>>
