Last Night Officials say it started when the
driver of a car headed west on
Washington Avenue crossed the eastbound
lane to turn into a parking lot.
Police say the tractor trailer hit
the car and then ran into the
Washington Manor apartments.
The incident knocked power out for
several hours.
One apartment was damaged and its
residents moved to another location.
Officials are examining the
building to assess the safety of the
situation.
No word yet on what may have caused
the accident.

Salem for the second time this week.

Yesterday, they were called to the
Vistar Eye Center just before six after
a gasket on a fluorine tank in the
laser surgery area malfunctioned.
Fluorine escaped, causing
hazardous breathing conditions.
Officials say two employees were
transported to Lewis Gale Hospital for
eye irritation, but were later
released.
No patients were in the building
at the time of the spill.
The HazMat team contained the
leaking tank and cleared the building
of fumes within an hour.

teen accused of killing her mother is
again delayed.

May 2004 It was a year ago this weekend
that 16-year-old Nakisha Waddell
stabbed her mother to death in her Max
Meadows home.
Vaughn Thomas was stabbed and
buried in the back yard.
In December, her daughter pled
guilty to first degree murder.
Family friend, 16-year-old
Anastacia Belcher pled guilty to second
degree murder.
The pair were to be sentenced
next week, but the hearing has been
delayed because a key defense witness
could not attend.

police and the murder suspect who spent
more than 3 days atop of an 18-story
construction crane in downtown Atlanta
threatening to kill himself.

custody this morning after police
climbed the crane and used a taser to
subdue and arrest him. Roland is wanted
in Florida for the death of his
ex-girlfriend Jennifer Gonzalez. An

of strangling Gonzalez and dumping her
body in a pond behind the apartment
complex where she lived.

Last Night Officials say it started when the
driver of a car headed west on
Washington Avenue crossed the eastbound
lane to turn into a parking lot.
Police say the tractor trailer hit
the car and then ran into the
Washington Manor apartments.
The incident knocked power out for
several hours.
One apartment was damaged and its
residents moved to another location.
Officials are examining the
building to assess the safety of the
situation.
No word yet on what may have caused
the accident.

May 2004 It was a year ago this weekend
that 16-year-old Nakisha Waddell
stabbed her mother to death in her Max
Meadows home.
Vaughn Thomas was stabbed and
buried in the back yard.
In December, her daughter pled
guilty to first degree murder.
Family friend, 16-year-old
Anastacia Belcher pled guilty to second
degree murder.
The pair were to be sentenced
next week, but the hearing has been
delayed because a key defense witness
could not attend.

PARALYZED.
The possible culprit was invisible: a
tire that looked new but was more
than six years old. They bought it
used-- not knowing that tires can
degrade with age no matter how good
they look.
Consumer safety analyst Sean Kane has
spent years looking into the issue
and says tires should come with a six
year expiration date.

So far, he's turned up 52 deaths and
more than 50 serious injuries in
accidents where an old tire may have
been a factor.

That may only scratch the surface since
nobody officially tracks the
cases. Spares are especially vulnerable
because they can sit around for
years.
The tire industry has been unwilling to
set an expiration date, saying
many factors besides age impact how
long a tire will last.

THERE'S ANOTHER CONCERN, WE DON'T WANT
TO GIVE CONSUMERS A FALSE PROMISE
THAT AN EXPIRATION DATE MEANS THEY WILL
GET THAT MUCH TIRE LIFE OUT OF
THEIR TIRES.
Where tire makers aren't taking action,
AUTOMAKERS are stepping in. Ford
recently led the way in warning
customers that tires should be scrapped
after six years or drivers risk injury
and death.
Meantime, you can check your own
tire's age by finding the four digits
of the tire's "DOT" number if the tire
was made in 2000 or after.

Last Night Festival in the Park 2005
began celebrating its 36th year with
the Honky Tonk Tailgate Party.
Chad Brock, Daryl Singletary,
David Kersh and Rhett Atkins performed
for thousands in Elmwood Park.
This year is the first that
all Festival events will be held at
Elmwood Park.
The fun continues through June
9th.
