AT ITS WORST IT FELT LIKE SOMEONE HAD

Mark Cotton had only a mild shingles
rash, but he was home sick for
three days and it took several weeks to
recover. In more severe cases
shingles can leave people with chronic
pain even after the rash
disappears.
(STAND UP)
SHINGLES HAPPENS WHEN THE CHICKENPOX
VIRUS BECOMES ACTIVE AGAIN. ALL
ADULTS WHO HAD CHICKENPOX ARE AT RISK,
BUT THE INFECTION IS MOST COMMON
IN OLDER PEOPLE.
So the Department of Veterans Affairs
tested an experimental
vaccine...on more than 38 thousand men
and women over age 60.
(graphic) They found that participants
who took the vaccine had half the
cases of shingles as those who did not
take the vaccine.
They also had less severe pain when
they did get the infection and there
was a 66 percent drop in cases of long
term chronic pain.
Dermatologists see a real benefit
......if this vaccine is approved by
the Food and Drug Administration.
(Dr. Wilma Bergfeld, Cleveland Clinic)
THESE VACCINES CREATE AN IMMUNE PROCESS
WHERE YOU'RE ABLE TO FIGHT OFF
THE INFECTION. SO THIS IS REVOLUTIONARY
FOR SHINGLES BECAUSE IT'S SUCH A
PAINFUL, DISABLING DISORDER, INFECTION,
IN THE ELDERLY.
Children already receive a chickenpox
vaccine and now adults may receive
some protection from the virus as well.
(Dr. Wilma Bergfeld)
I LIKEN THIS TO THE PNEUMONIA VACCINE.
CERTAINLY THOSE WHO ARE
CHRONICALLY ILL WILL GET IT, THOSE WHO
ARE OVER 60 WILL GET IT.
(Mark Cotton)
IF THERE WERE A VACCINE I WOULD BE ONE
OF THE FIRST TO TAKE IT.
Younger adults could also benefit and
after the pain he suffered, Mark
certainly hopes a vaccine for shingles
becomes a reality.

espn2 Unseeded Mariano Puerta advanced
:00 by beating fellow Argentine Guillermo
Canas 6-2, 3-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the
French Open. Puerta is playing in his
first Grand Slam event since serving a
suspension that began in October 2003
after he tested positive for a drug
whose effects resemble those of
anabolic steroids. An investigative
panel determined that a doctor
prescribed the drug to Puerta to treat
an acute asthma attack. None of that
mattered today as he made it to the
final four. The semi-finals at Roland
Garros are Friday.

Percy and Florence Arrowsmith
have been married for 80 years.
Percy is 105. His bride is 100.
They met at their local church,
where they eventually married in 1925.
A team from The Guiness Book of
World Records believes the Arrowsmiths
have the longest known marriage in
history.
Florence says she can't dance
anymore, but she does still like the
occasional drink.
When asked about the key to
a happy marriage, Percy said the answer
is always to say, "Yes, Dear."

But what do you expect when you
exchange you vows at the top of a water
slide?
Jen Fisher and John Murphy said
"I do," at an Illinois water park.
Then they dove into marital bliss
with a ride down the slide together -
John in his tux and Jen in her wedding
gown.
Family members say they weren't
quite sure what to think when they
heard of the couple's wedding plans.
The newlyweds say they wanted to
do a water wedding because it was fun
and unique.
