court yesterday for Michael Jackson.
The pop star was present as the
judge instructed the jury on how to
consider the charges against Jackson in
his child molestation trial.
He faces 10 counts, including four
counts of committing a lewd act upon a
minor.
A spokeswoman says Jackson has a
quote "strong faith in God" and the
courts.
Teri Okita is in Santa Maria,
California and she joins us now with an
update from the trial.

lookout for a gunman who shot two
people to death in what they say may
have been racially- motivated killings.

Captain Mark Segal says a gunman
killed a person of Middle Eastern
descent in a food market, and then
killed an Asian person at a
dry-cleaning store two doors down.
Both were shot in the head.
Segal says based on witness
accounts, the suspected gunman made

Police are trying to determine
whether a third shooting, which took
place ten minutes earlier about three
miles away, was related.
That victim also was shot in the
head.

this morning for some Roanoke County
students, after a car crashed into
their bus.

around eight this morning on Jae Valley
Road.
Officials say a car driven by
Faye Bandy Smith crossed the double
yellow lines and struck the bus in the
left side.
The bus sustained a bent wheel
and a flat tire, while police say
Smith's car received substantial
damage.
Smith was charged with Failure to
maintain control of a motor vehicle.
There were no injuries reported,
and all 23 students on the bus did make
it to school.

in Indiana ended in gunfire this
morning, and with the death of the
suspect.

hostage in the store since yesterday
morning.
Once he broke off communications
with police negotiators, authorities
say the man starting firing shots.
The SWAT team then went in, and the
gunman was killed.
The hostage, meanwhile, was safely
taken out of the store.
The gunman held the woman for nearly
20 hours after fleeing from police in a
highway chase.

She wore running shoes--but the runaway
bride didn't make a break for it
this time.
With her jilted fianc� by her side
Jennifer Wilbanks entered a Georgia
Courtroom.
Then standing before a judge with her
engagement ring still on her left
finger Wilbanks pleaded no contest to
making a false
statement.
She cried as she told the court "I'm
truly sorry for my actions and I
just want to thank Gwinnett County and
the city of Duluth,"
The charge stemmed from the yarn she
spun about being abducted and
sexually assaulted five weeks ago.
In reality--the 32- year old nurse
skipped town just days before her
wedding to John Mason and took a bus to
Las Vegas and New Mexico.
Wilbanks could have faced up to six
yeas in prison-instead the judge
recommended two years probation and 120
hours of community service
This week-she paid more 13-thousand
dollars to the city of Duluth to
help cover the overtime costs the city
incurred sending police out to
search for her.

custody of a man shot by police last
month.

to run over law enforcement officers
the night he was shot in the arm and

He has since been picked up by
federal authorities and faces a
four-count indictment on

cocaine, marijuana and 11 firearms.
Akers is now being held in
Roanoke on federal charges.

Around 11:30, someone walked in and

from the Postal Store.

competition.
The first speller to be eliminated
today was a sixth grader from
Colorado, who missed the word
"ligniperdous" (lig- nih- PUR- dus).
It's a word that describes something
that destroys wood.
Most of the finalists in the spelling
bee have competed before, and
a half- dozen are home- schooled.
The winner will receive 28- thousand
dollars in cash, bonds, and
scholarships, a set of encyclopedias,
and an engraved cup.
