water from a nearby creek rose so
quickly residents almost had to be
evacuated.

Down trees and power lines could be

found all over Botetourt County as well
as in Roanoke.

in South Roanoke had to be shut down
because of high waters.

homes this morning, after police say a
child playing with a lighter set an
apartment complex on fire.


The incident happened at San
Souci apartments on Garst Mill Road in
Roanoke County, shorlty after 11
o'clock last night.

Five apartments suffered damage.
The Red Cross gave the families a place
to stay for the night. No one was
hurt.

After eight weeks of declines, gas
prices are inching higher again. The
Energy Dept says average retail prices
rose 1.8 cents to 2-15 a gallon.. The
cheapest, on the gulf coast were the
average is 2 dollars a gallon.. The
most expensive... The west coast where

Home improvement giant Lowe's is going
international. The company plans to
open as many as 10 stores in Canada by

over the past few months.

governor's race in fundraising.

million dollars since April- first,
bringing his total to more than ten-
million dollars.

During the same period Republican
Jerry Kilgore added more than 1- point
4 million for a total of nearly nine
million.

Republican George Fitch says his
campaign hasn't raised nearly that
much.

But Fitch says he doesn't need
millions to run a successful campaign,
although a lack of money does make it
harder to compete.

Four families are without homes
in Roanoke County.

Police say a kid playing with a
ligher burned down five apartments at
the San Souci complex on Garst Mill
Road on fire last night.

reporting no major injuries afer storms
yesterday dumped up to two inches of
rain in places.

Roads were closed, power lines
were knocked down, and homes were
nearly evacuated.
