once you start narrowing the keyboard

IF YOU USE A LAP-TOP IN THE OFFICE OR

farmers have been hit hard with cheaper
prices overseas and cuts in quotas.

Now farmers are having to
diversify their crops.

After doing some research and
consulting with aquaculture officials,
Johnny Angell decided to convert some
of his tobacco fields into ponds.

And in those ponds, he's farming
fresh water shrimp.

The shrimp are native to
countries in Southeast Asia and are
bigger than the salt water shrimp.

Johnny says in late September or
early October he plans to harvest about
two thousand pounds.

We talked to an aquaculture
official at Virginia Tech who said
Johnny Angell could be the only fresh
water shrimp farmer in the
Commonwealth.

Shannon, other tobacco farmers in
southern states like Georgia, Kentucky
and North Carolina are already
experimenting with the industry because
the climates are similar to that of
southeast Asia.
