pulling straight out of this driveway
on Chaparral Drive which is directly
across from Cave Spring High School.

Gulum lives next door and was in

her bedroom that night when Joyce
Hawthorne was killed.

marks where the two cars collided, a
Roanoke County police cruiser, and
Hawthorne's boyfriends Ford Expedition.

Gulum says the driver side of the
SUV was smashed in, and the police
cruiser didn't look much better.

to respond was only seconds away,
gassing up her car in the high school
parking lot, and that officer was able

to dowse the flames.

Hawthorne and the police officer
were transported to Roanoke Memorial
where Hawthorne later died.

Hawthorne's friends and
co-workers we talked to says she will
be missed.

She worked at the Mount Regis
Center in Salem, an alcohol and drug
treatment center, for 18 years.

With little information being
released about the crash, residents in
the area like Ruben Terry are relying
on what they know to answer their
questions.

SUV and escaped the crash with no
injuries.

agreed that because of where the
driveway is, and the brush in that
area, it is difficult for drivers
coming down Chaparral to know if
someone is pulling out of that
particular driveway.

investigating an armed robbery.

They say the suspect approached
an employee who was locking the door at
the Fas-Mart on Arnett Boulevard around
12:30 last night.

The suspect demanded money, and
shoved the woman to the ground.

He then took off on foot with an
unkown amount of cash.

Authorities describe the suspect
as a medium build black man, who was
wearing black jeans and yellow gloves.

now spreading rain into the Ohio
Valley.

Florida.

But despite hitting the panhandle with
60 mile-per-hour winds, the storm was
little more than a rain event.

One forecaster says "A few rivers had

the case of a missing Alabama teenager.

Cheney says the prison holds "bad

Pocono, but tire trouble turned out to
be the story today in the mountains of
Northeastern Pennsylvania.

miserable season got worse today.
Little E limped home with a 33rd place

Just ask Kevin Lepage who smacks the

up his race car and all he had to show

picked up his career series victory
leading 69 laps. Bowyer outdistanced
