driveway on Chaparral Drive when she
was hit by an ON-DUTY officer.
His name is not being released by
officials.
Hawthorne died at the hospital.
No word on the officer's
condition.
Hawthorne's co-workers at the
Mount Regis Center in Salem say she
will be missed.
She worked at the drug abuse
center for nearly two decades.

GRAPHIC=Shooting Danville police are looking for a
man who shot another man in an
*apartment* complex.
Police say the shooting happened
yesterday afternoon at the Woodside
Village Apartments off Piney Forest
Road.
The victim says the shooter
approached him from behind and then
shot him.
The man suffered injuries to his
groin and abdomen.
A friend nearby later took the
victim to the hospital.
Police are looking for dark
skinned black man who's about six feet
tall.
He was also wearing a hat.

investigating an armed robbery.
They say the suspect approached
an employee who was locking the door at
the Fas-Mart on Arnett Boulevard around
12:30 Sunday morning.
The suspect demanded money, and
shoved the woman to the ground.
He then took off on foot with an
unkown amount of cash.
Authorities describe the suspect
as a medium build black man, who was
wearing black jeans and yellow gloves.

held a *get out the vote rally* in
Roanoke.
McDonnell was joined by some well
known Republicans in the Roanoke Valley
including Congressman Bob Goodlatte.

Voting begins for Virginia's dual
primaries tomorrow.

Supervisors could vote tomorrow on a
conditional use permit needed to start
construction of wind *turbines* in
2006.
The 60-million-dollar project was
proposed three years ago-- and
continues to divide people in the rural
area.
Supporters say the machines will
generate big tax revenue for the
financially strapped county.
But, opponents believe the
turbines will destroy the wilderness
and *rural culture* of an area known as
"Virginia's Switzerland."
A court battle likely will follow
any board decision. Both sides have
vowed to continue to fight.

300-homes and hundreds of stores to
Daleville will face its first hurdle
tonight.

would change more than 100-hundred
acres, known as the Layman Brothers
Orchards, into a development with
single family homes, stores and
apartments.
The new development would be
called Daleville Town Center and would
be classified as a "Traditional
Neighborhood District."
Officials say it would be a
planned community where residents can
shop, live and hang out.
