could be to blame for an accident that
left one woman dead and injured an on-
duty Roanoke County police officer.

It happened around 11:30 Friday
night.

on Chaparral Drive which is directly
across from Cave Spring High School.

Gulum lives next door and was in
her bedroom that night when Joyce
Hawthorne was killed.

Hawthorne's boyfriends Ford Expedition.

Gulum says the driver side of the
SUV was smashed in, and the police
cruiser didn't look much better.

to respond was only seconds away,
gassing up her car in the high school
parking lot, and that officer was able
to dowse the flames.

Hawthorne and the police officer
were transported to Roanoke Memorial
where Hawthorne later died.

Hawthorne's friends and
co-workers we talked to says she will
be missed.

She worked at the Mount Regis
Center in Salem, an alcohol and drug
treatment center, for 18 years.


With little information being
released about the crash, residents in
the area like Ruben Terry are relying
on what they know to answer their
questions.

conditional use permit needed to start
construction of wind *turbines* in
2006.

The 60-million-dollar project was

proposed three years ago-- and
continues to divide people in the rural

turbines will destroy the wilderness

man who shot another man in an
*apartment* complex.

Police say the shooting happened
yesterday afternoon at the Woodside
Village Apartments off of Piney Forest
Road.

The victim says the shooter
approached him from behind and then
shot him.

The man suffered injuries to his
groin and abdomen.

A friend nearby later took the
victim to the hospital.

Police are looking for dark
skinned black man who's about six feet
tall.

He was also wearing a hat.

investigating an armed robbery.

They say the suspect approached
an employee who was locking the door at
the Fas-Mart on Arnett Boulevard around
12:30 Sunday morning.

The suspect demanded money, and
shoved the woman to the ground.

He then took off on foot with an
unkown amount of cash.

Authorities describe the suspect
as a medium build black man, who was
wearing black jeans and yellow gloves.

controversial proposal there.

The board may make a decision on
a conditional use permit needed to
start construction of wind *turbines*
in 2006.

The 60-million-dollar project was
proposed three years ago-- and
continues to divide people in the rural
area.

Supporters say the machines will
generate big tax revenue for the
financially strapped county.

But, opponents believe the
turbines will destroy the wilderness
and *rural culture* of an area known as
"Virginia's Switzerland."

A court battle likely will follow

her bedroom that night when Joyce
Hawthorne was killed.

SUV was smashed in, and the police

gassing up her car in the high school
parking lot, and that officer was able
to dowse the flames.

Hawthorne and the police officer
were transported to Roanoke Memorial
where Hawthorne later died.

Hawthorne's friends and
co-workers we talked to says she will

be missed.

She worked at the Mount Regis
Center in Salem, an alcohol and drug
treatment center, for 18 years.

With little information being
released about the crash, residents in
the area like Ruben Terry are relying
on what they know to answer their
questions.

conditional use permit needed to start
construction of wind *turbines* in
2006.

The 60-million-dollar project was
proposed three years ago-- and
continues to divide people in the rural
area.

Supporters say the machines will

But, opponents believe the
turbines will destroy the wilderness

man who shot another man in an
*apartment* complex.

Police say the shooting happened
yesterday afternoon at the Woodside
Village Apartments off of Piney Forest
Road.

The victim says the shooter
approached him from behind and then
shot him.

The man suffered injuries to his
groin and abdomen.

A friend nearby later took the
victim to the hospital.

Police are looking for dark
skinned black man who's about six feet
tall.

He was also wearing a hat.

investigating an armed robbery.

They say the suspect approached
an employee who was locking the door at
the Fas-Mart on Arnett Boulevard around
12:30 Sunday morning.

The suspect demanded money, and

shoved the woman to the ground.

He then took off on foot with an
unkown amount of cash.

Authorities describe the suspect
as a medium build black man, who was
wearing black jeans and yellow gloves.
