water swept down on Route 460 at the
Bedford-Campbell County line.
Martin had been working to help
stranded motorists to safety ... but
when the Timber Lake dam collapsed
upstream, the deluge came with no
warning.
Memories of that night have stuck
with the rescue personnel who were
there.

spend the next 35 years behind bars for
killing her mother and burying her in
the backyard.

sentenced Waddell to a total of 70
years, with 35 years suspended , for
the stabbing death of Vaughne Thomas.
16-year-old Anastasia Belcher
also pled guilty to Thomas's murder in
December. She'll have to spend 15 years
in custody for her part in the murder.

Fall was supposed to bring the promise
of the new blessing for the
Torres family.
26 year old Susan, her husband Jason --
and their toddler Peter would
soon have someone new to love.
But, in late April -- Susan starting
having symptoms of what she thought
was just morning sickness.
Doctors told her she was dehydrated.
Then, the day before Mother's Day...
something happened.
"She was in bed, we were talking... she
just stopped..."Susan was rushed
to Virginia Hospital Center.
Doctors told her husband Jason... she
had no brain function.
"They were going to do emergency
surgery to remove a cancerous growth."
Susan had been diagnosed stage four
melanoma.

The cruelest part of this is that Susan
never knew the melanoma reared
it's ugly head until it was too late.
By then, she'd collapsed... it
took doctors a few days to figure out
it was cancer... that it was in
it's most advanced stage... that it had
spread to her brain. There was
no hope of a recovery.
But doctors are trying to save her
unborn baby.
Even that is risky.
"We have to weigh the dangers of
whether it's more dangerous to take the
child early or late.."
Jason hopes the baby will make it to 25
weeks -- then he'll have to make
a decision.
Lesli says: "When you look at these
pictures.. what do you see?"
"These are from the good times..."
The good times seemed to go so fast...
Susan and Jason were married just three
years... Their son Peter just
turned two.
Now Jason spends most of his time -- by
his wife's bedside.
"I remember the last thing she said...
she was sorry she'd been so much
trouble."
"It's a comfort to sit there... I know
time is running out...">>

A man who stole a City of Hollywood,
Florida utility truck this morning then
led police on a high-speed chase.
HIgh-speed for a while, anyway, before
the truck got stalled in heavy traffic.
Police captured the suspect at
gunpoint, but aerial cameras suggest
that's not all they did.
One of the officers appears to
repeatedly hit the suspect with his
knee. No word on whether local police
will review the tape.

Sureway Beneficial has made their way
to Roanoke. According to the Better
Business Bureau the company out of New
York is like many Advanced Fee Credit
Card Scams they have seen across the
nation. The advanced fee pitch goes
something like this:
People with poor credit or who are in
need of cash are targeted either by
phone solicitation or other marketing
tools.
For an advanced fee the company
promisies a credit card that seems like
a great deal. Recently a Roanoke woman
was promised a "No Annual Fee" "No
Interest" Mastercard for $249.
After paying the fee there's nothing
left to do but wait for the great card-
that will never come.
And - Surprise, Surprise, you probably
won't get much of a response out of the
company either. Keep these things in
mind before falling for this one:
Legitimate lenders never guarantee to
get you a loan or credit card before
you apply, especially if you have bad
credit, no credit, or have declared
bankruptcy in the past
Legitimate lenders never ask you to pay
for processing your application. One
exception is real estate; it is
accepted and normal practice for
lenders to request payment for a credit
report or appraisal.
And remember: a company's money back
guarantee is no good if the company
closes it doors
While you may be in a situation that
causes you to think these scammers have
the answer to all your problems - all
they will do it get you into more debt.
