GRAPHIC=News 7 at Noon Police in a Smyth County town are
investigating the ununusal death of a
five year old girl in a laundromat.
Chilhowie Police Chief Dwayne
Sheffield says Rebecca Hope Wagoner
apparently died in a triple load
washing machine.
Sheffield says investigators don't
know how the 30-pound girl got inside
the machine.
Police and rescuers responded to a
call Sunday night and found the glass
window of the washer shattered, the
floor covered with water, and Rebecca
unconscious.
She was pronounced dead at a
hospital.
The girl's mother, Rebecca Billings
Wagoner, told police she stepped
outside the laundromat and left her
daughter and her 14-year-old brother
inside.
Sheffield says the mother smashed
the door open with a rock and pulled
her daughter out before police arrived.
No charges have been filed.

Mississippi jurors arrrived at court
split 6 to 6 . They spent the
night sequestered after telling the
judge they were deadlocked.
Now on this 41st anniversary of the
murders they'll continue to debate
the fate of former Ku Klux Klansman
Edgar Ray Killen.
Killen was accused of masterminding the
slayings of James Chaney, Andrew
Goodman and Michael Schwerner...civil
rights workers who were helping to
register black voters. They were
ambushed and shot by a gang of
Klansmen, their bodies found 44 days
later, buried in a earthen dam in
rural Neshoba County, Mississippi
SOT: Mike Hatcher, former police
officer and Ku Klux Klan member
11:49:55
It was common knowledge who ran the
Klan and Edgar Killen was the man.
Killen's name has been associated with
the 1964 slayings from the
beginning. He was tried in 1967 along
with several others on federal
charges of violating the victim's civil
rights. The all-white jury
deadlocked in Killen's case, but seven
others were convicted. None
served more than six years.
Bridge: Alison Harmelin reporting.
This time, prosecutors brought the
first-ever state murder charges in
the case, trying to prove that Killen
planned the murders and helped
round up Klansmen to chase down and
kill the three men.
SOT: Jim Hood, Mississippi Attorney
General
We have to prove the defendant had the
intent to kill. We don't have to
prove who pulled the trigger. 14:13:33
Killen himself never took the stand in
his own defense. Though he
admitted to being a member of the Ku
Klux Klan, he steadfastly denied
any involvement in the men's murders.
SOT: James Mc Intyre , Defense Attorney
14:49:04
You can't find him guilty just because
he belonged to an organization of
hate.
The jurors... nine white and three
black, deliberated for just a few
hours on Monday, before telling the
judge there was trouble in the jury
room. The deadlock has some analysts
predicting an acquittal... or a
hung jury. If convicted, Killen
could get life in prison... and with
that sentence - he would likely die
behind bars. Alison Harmelin, News 7.
