GRAPHIC=None A much needed Southwest Virginia
road project received a setback today.
The federal government pulled its
funding from the Coalfields Expressway,
citing delays and rising costs.
Originally the project was
supposed to cost one-point-six billion
dollars.
Now the price tag has doubled to
three-point-eight billion dollars since
2001.
The 51-mile road was suppose to
run from Wise County to the Virginia
Coalfields Expressway.
Republican candidate for Governor
Jerry Kilgore pledged today to work
with the federal government to
reinstate funding for this project.
