April 22 Orion spent three days in Judge
Gamble's courtroom trying to prove that
shooting clay targets was part of a
Virginian's Constitutional right to
hunt.

Orion owns 450 acres of land in
southeastern Nelson County where it
operates a live game preserve.

It had sought permission to let
its hunters also use clay targets for
warm-up practice before going out to
hunt ... the county claimed Orion was
just trying to make a buck by going
around what supervisors had originally
allowed on that land.

Judge Gamble himself even saw a
demonstration of the shooting during
the trial back in April.

Morris Peterson is talking with his

why a Lynchburg man died while in the
custody of Amherst County sheriff's
deputies.

Amherst authorities say 29-year-old
Sanchez Jarkel Taylor stopped his car
in the northbound lanes of Route 29
June 16th.

A few minutes later, a neighbor
reported seeing Taylor trying to break
into Bethel's Welding Shop.

Deputies who responded say Taylor
was acting strangely and resisted
arrest.

After he was pepper-sprayed,
Taylor apparently began having
respiratory problems and later died at
the hospital.

The medical examiner has 'not'
determined a cause of death.

cracked a four year old shooting case.

On December 16, 2000, Barry
Ray Leftwich was found dead outside a
home on Marshall Terrace.

Last month, police arrested
Charlie Luther Wilson, Junior of Blairs
on an outstanding warrant.

Police say the investigation
now leads them to believe Wilson
accidentally shot Leftwich.

Wilson's now charged with
involuntary manslaughter.

Newport News Police just after eleven
o'clock.

Gaskins' estranged wife, *Veronica,*
swore out the warrant yesterday for
assault and battery.

She claims her husband pushed her down
some steps during an argument Monday
morning at a relative's home in Newport
News.

Mrs. Gaskins is alleged to have used a
tire iron to smash out the windows and
headlights of her husband's Cadillac.

Police say there was another female

with Gaskins at the time.

No was hurt during the confrontation.

and avoided the rain.

Not even the wet stuff could have
cooled off the threesome of Dot
Bolling, Meg Davies and Vickie Kasza.
All three ladies shot their career best
rounds at Ole Monteray. Bolling had a
bogey free 18 holes that included 4
birdies, she shot a 67 and is 1 stroke
out of the lead.

Kasza who was 6 shots back after
the first round, put up a 69 that
included this birdie putt on 15 that
found the bottom of the cup. Even by
shooting 3 under par Kasza lost ground
to the leader.

That's because Davies will be atop
the leader board heading into the final
round at Roanoke Country Club. She
shot 66 and that included 2 bogeys.

Webb, but she definitely wins the title
for the biggest handicap on the course.

tournament with a stress fracture in
her right leg. She is wearing a
protective walking boot but still
playing golf. Webb actually hurt her
leg while playing golf by stepped in a
hole on the course. After sitting out
for 10 days she went back to playing
golf with her doctor's permission. But

if you can believe it, she's played
with worse.
