Burcham says she'll conduct a thorough
investigation of the assault charge
against police chief Joe Gaskins.
In a statement last night,
Burcham said Gaskins will remain on the
job until the investigation is
complete.

In a seperate statement yesterday
afternoon, Gaskins says "The
allegations that led to the warrant are
not true. I remain confident that the

Gaskins' estranged wife, Veronica,

Police reports describe both

Burcham says she'll conduct a thorough
investigation of the assault charge
against police chief Joe Gaskins.
In a statement last night,
Burcham said Gaskins will remain on the
job until the investigation is
complete.

In the meantime, the chief is
asserting his innocence.
In a seperate statement yesterday
afternoon, Gaskins says "The
allegations that led to the warrant are
not true. I remain confident that the
justice system will disclose the truth
and I will be cleared of these
allegations.

The response comes two days after
Gaskins' estranged wife, Veronica,
swore out a warrant accusing him of
assaulting her at this Newport News
home.
Police reports describe both
Gaskins and his wife as "apologetic."
It also says Gaskins was "calm"
and his wife was "angry" when officers
arrived.
During a 911- call, Mrs. Gaskins
says her husband's girlfriend was at
the house during the confrontation.

green light for a space shuttle launch
later this month.

Police in Danville are cracking down on

dog attacks.
To cut down on the incidents,
Danville's police chief last night
instructed his officers to immediately
ticket any dog owner who can't provide
