THIS PICTURE SHOWS THE IMPACTOR PROBE
SMASHING INTO A COMET.. WITH A
COLLISION EQUIVALENT TO EXPLODING
NEARLY FIVE TONS OF DYNAMITE.
(Bill Harwood, CBS NEWS Space Analyst)
HARWOOD 2:20:40 as it turned out it
really did put out a spectacular
display. A very brilliant flash when
this thing hit. A large cloud of
debris, icy debris when it hit that
spread out into space.
IT'S THE COSMIC EXPLOSION SCIENTISTS
WANTED TO SEE THE FIRST TIME PART
OF A SPACECRAFT TOUCHED THE SURFACE OF
COMET.
DEEP IMPACT LAUNCHED FROM CAPE
CANAVERAL BACK IN JANUARY.. CARRYING
THE
IMPACTOR PROBE 83 MILLION MILES FOR
THIS MISSION. THE PROBE SEPARATED
FROM THE MOTHER SHIP SATURDAY NIGHT..
AND HAD TO FLY THE FINAL THE
CRITICAL HOURS BEFORE THE COLLISION ON
ITS OWN.
HARWOOD 2:23:30 it is really a
spectacular piece of navigation and
they
pulled it off without a hitch
AS THE PROBE APPROACHED THE TEMPLE 1
COMET.. HALF THE SIZE OF
MANHATTAN.. IT SNAPPED THESE PHOTOS
SHOWING CRATER LIKE FEATURES. NOW
SCIENTISTS HOPE TO LOOK INSIDE THE
CRATER THEY JUST BLASTED TO STUDY THE
COMET'S FROZEN CORE AND FIND CLUES TO
THE ORIGIN OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM.
HARWOOD 2:22:38 they will have more
than enough information to go off
and rewrite the text books.. it truly
is a fundamental step forward
NASA SAYS THE CAREFULLY ORCHESTRATED
COLLISION DID NOT SIGNIFICANTLY
ALTER THE COMET'S ORBIT AROUND THE
SUN.. AND THE EXPERIMENT POSES NO
DANGER TO EARTH. TERI OKITA, CBS NEWS,
