10 KMC PKG-Cindy 1 pkg TS Cindy 4666 --
GRAPHIC=Cindy It's a wet Wednesday morning in low-

lying Louisiana and other parts of the
Gulf Coast.

That after Tropical Storm Cindy made
landfall last night, dumping heavy rain
rain on coastal areas.

Drew Levinson is in New Orleans with
an update.

(END SOT) CINDY WASN'T A HURRICANE ....

(NAT)

BUT SHE STILL PACKED QUITE A PUNCH.
THE TROPICAL STORM MADE LANDFALL

LATE LAST NIGHT ... AND DUMPED SEVERAL
INCHES OF RAIN ON LOW-LYING

LOUISIANA.

RESIDENTS IN PLAQUEMINES PARISH FOUND
THEMSELVES SURROUNDED BY WATER.

(MOS)

"I didn't think it was going to come up
this much water right now. It's

coming up quicker than what I thought

it was."

(NAT)

POWERFUL WINDS BATTERED THE BARRIER
ISLAND OF GRANDE ISLE, WHERE

OFFICIALS HAD ORDERED THE EVACUATION OF
ALL RECREATIONAL VEHICLES FROM

THE POPULAR VACATION SPOT.

(STANDUP BRIDGE)

AT TIMES THE SUSTAINED WINDS OF
TROPICAL STORM CINDY WERE AT 60 MILES
AN

HOUR, BUT REALLY THE WINDS WEREN'T THE
PROBLEM. MORE AND MORE THE

EXPERTS WERE CONCERNED WITH THE RAIN.
THEY WERE AFRAID THAT IF it

HOVERED OVER THIS AREA, THE CHANCES FOR
FLOODING WERE INCREASED. BUT

FORTUNATELY, IT WAS A FAST-MOVING
STORM.

STILL, CINDY MANAGED TO KNOCK OUT POWER
TO TENS OF THOUSANDS OF

CUSTOMERS IN SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA.

NUMEROUS FLIGHTS WERE ALSO CANCELED.

CINDY IS THE THIRD NAMED STORM IN A

SEASON THAT FORECASTERS PREDICT WILL

ONLY GET WORSE.

BY THIS WEEKEND, TROPICAL STORM DENNIS
COULD BARREL INTO THE GULF ...

POTENTIALLY WREAKING EVEN MORE HAVOC.

(SOT: NEIL FRANK/KHOU-TV METEOROLOGIST)

"I'm not going to be surprised if we
have something in the order of 14,

15 storms this year -- maybe even more
-- with this active start."

(NAT)

BUT THE WIND AND THE RAIN HAVE NOT
DAMPENED THE SPIRITS OF REVELERS IN

THE FRENCH QUARTER. THEY'RE KEEPING
THEIR UMBRELLAS AND RAIN COATS

HANDY ... AS THEY WAIT FOR THE NEXT
STORM TO ROLL INTO TOWN.

Signs can be found in the peeling

that are released can't be seen by the

Contaminated soil can be a health
risk, so this summer, researchers at
Randolph Macon Woman's College are
dedicated to getting the lead out.

Certain plants, like corn and

What professors Bill Bare and

under what conditions.
