The folks in southside got much more,
anywhere between two to four inches.
There, it was definitely a summer

The storm started hammering the
southside area just after 4:30.
With it came impressive lightning
(3:57) and thunder.

But what most people will remember is
the heavy rain.

More than an inch and a half of rain
fell in the Danville area within a 45
minute period.

In fact, so much rain fell it turned
run-offs into waterfalls.

The wind was also strong (shot of
flags 14:23) topping more than 25 miles
a hour.
It was strong enough to knock this

Vehicles also took a beating.
The driver of this car hydroplaned
and hit a guardrail on highway 58 in
Brosville.
The driver was not hurt.

By nightfall the severe storms moved
out but the rain stayed put.

It was enough to cause plenty of
localized flooding in Pittsylvania
County (5:43) and Henry County.

Upon word of the attacks, Prime
Minister Tony Blair rushed to London
from the G-8 Summit but returned to
Scotland later in the day.
He called the attacks "barbaric"
and says they were timed to coincide
with the summit.
At Queen Elizabeth's request, the

was lowered to half-staff.

The clerk was not injured.
The suspect is being described as

He drove away in a gold four-door

this morning killed a woman from Floyd

hospital.

guardrail, overturned and caught fire.
Investigators believe Autumn Lee

slick road, and was killed in the
crash.
An adult passenger is in the

contracts with the Charlotte Bobcats
today. Both were first-round picks in
this year's N-B-A draft. Felton, the
fifth overall pick, and May was the
13th selection. They'll likely play on

Lake City later this month.

one of the top high school basketball
coaches in the area is taking his game
to college.
Bryan Harvey has been named the
new head women's coach at Ferrum
College.

VO-NAT Harvey has been a mainstay at
Glenvar high school since 1997, leading
the Lady Highlanders to state Single A
titles in 1997 and 2001 and two other
final four appearances.
He has 133 wins and 73 losses in
his eight year high school career.
His wife Karen is the head coach
at Hollins.

of all-time is returning to the
sideline as an assistant coach at Salem
High School.

:00 Brian Hooker, the head coach at
Glenvar for 11 seasons before becoming
an assistant principal at Hidden Valley
Middle School, is returning to Salem -
where he played and was a member of the
school's first graduating class in
1978.
Hooker, who also is a former
Friday Football Extra coach of the
year, will be reunited with Steve
Magenbauer the Salem head coach -
although this time the two will be in
reverse roles.
For four seasons in the late 90s
- Magenbauer was one of Hooker's top
assistant coaches at Glenvar.
Ironically, Hooker also taught
Magenbauer when he was a middle school
student at Andrew Lewis.

GRAPHIC=Atlanta Tropical storm Cindy has proven
to be a lot of thing to a lot of people
in the past 72 hours - but one thing
she is not is a NASCAR fan.

A tornado touched down at the
Atlanta Motor Speedway last night
doing millions of dollars in damage
according to speedway officials.
The condominium complex received
the worst of it. Parts of the track
were covered in debris, roofs were torn
off of the office complex, and bedding
was hanging from balconies.
No one was injured, despite the
fact that vehicles around the track
were overturned by the strong winds.
The next Cup race at the track
is scheduled for October 30th.

France turned out to be a mess today.

OLN It was a rainy day with Lance
Armstrong wearing the yellow jersey,
but starting out the day's ride in a
rain jacket.
There were no real problems until
a half mile from the end of the stage
when on the final turn the leading
rider went down. A number of other
riders wrecked on the turn as well
causing a pile-up.
Armstrong was able to avoid the
wreck, he retained the yellow jersey,
maintaining a 55 second lead over his
teammate George Hincappie. Lorenzo
Bernucci won the stage his first ever
win in the Tour De France.

He and his platoon had been
patroling the streets of Baquba
(BAH-coo-bah), Iraq when a young boy
called out to them.

up in a sea of happy children.
