Hurricane Dennis slammed into the
Florida panhandle earlier this
afternoon with winds topping more than
120 miles per hour.

Violent winds were also felt in
southern Alabama, where

residents were warned of possible
tornadoes.

GRAPHIC=Hurricane Dennis More than a million people were


asked to leave their homes, leaving
many communities deserted.

Forecasters say Dennis' eye came
ashore about midway between the *Santa
Rosa Island* towns of Navarre Beach and
Pensacola Beach at 3:25 p-m, Eastern
time.

Navarre Beach is about 50 miles
east of where Hurricane Ivan crossed
last year.

The category three storm brought
high winds and heavy rains along the
Gulf Coast.

By early Sunday afternoon, Pensacola
really began seeing the brunt of

this storm. Weve got debris all over
the place here, the rain really

stings when it hits your face, you can
see the signs are starting to

come down, the trees are really taking
a whipping. The hurricane force

winds extend out 40 miles from the
center and they are powerful winds.

24-year-old *Melissa Hedrick of Gretna*
died when she was thrown from her car.

Authorities say she ran off the right

old fired a final round 6-under 65 to
finish at 16-under, holding off JL
Lewis and Hank Kuehne, and earning a
spot in the British Open.

At the Ford Senior Players
Championship, Galax native Tom McKnight
had the lead on the back nine with
putts like this one right here.

But it all came apart at the 14th
hole with one swing. McKnight topped
his second shot into the hazard
effectively ending his shot at the win.
He settled for a tie for 3rd.

Peter Jacobsen shot a 6-under 66
to get to 15-under, beating Hale Irwin
by one stroke.
