Talk about your political cliffhangers.
After Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's
surprise announcement that SHE is
retiring, no one knows if Rehnquist
will follow suit.
Sen Arlen Specter R-PA from FTN
my own analysis is that the chief does
not intend to step down as long as his
health holds out.
Narr
That from the Senate's Republican
Judiciary committee chairman. Should it
happen though, Democrats are worried
that two openings would give President
Bush the chance to create an overtly
conservative court.
Sen Charles Schumer D-NY
I've always said a Supreme Court with
one Scalia and one Brennan, would be a
great court. A court with five of each,
or five of either, would be a very bad
court.
Narr
The political wrangling is in full
flow, but then there's also the
Washington rumor mill .... With yet
another theory in play. This one has
quite the twist: an effort to persuade
the supposedly retiring O'Connor that
she could replace a retiring Rehnquist.
Sen Arlen Specter R-PA from FTN
Well, I think it would be very tempting
if the president said, Justice
O'Connor, you could help the country
now.
Narr:
That's right - there's some Washington
chatter out there that Justice O'Connor
could stay on after all in order to
become Chief Justice if Rehnquist does
resign.
Sen Arlen Specter R-PA from FTN
And in her letter of resignation, as
you know, she conditioned it on the
confirmation of a successor. So there's
some flexibility. Who knows?

GRAPHIC=Nextel Cup Dale Earnhardt Junior has been in
ENG#=2 a losing rut since last November, with
only two top- five finishes so far this
season.
Junior had also been through two
crew chief changes since the end of
last year, but it was all water under
the bridge yesterday in Chicago.

NBC Sports Tire troubles plagued many,
:00 including Elliott Sadler.
He wound up 37th, and Michael
Waltrip was just one spot better in
36th.
Jeff Gordon took another hit on
the track and in the points.
Mike Bliss made sure of that --
spinning Gordon late in the race to
bring out one of 10 yellow flags.
Junior took two tires on a pit
stop with just 24 laps to go.
That got him to second, and then he
passed Scott Wimmer with 10 to go,
never looking back.
He recorded his first win of the year
and jumped three spots in the points to
13th.
