more news on inflation in a few hours.
The producer price index which tracks
wholesale prices comes out later this
morning. Consumer prices remained
steady in June, the Labor Department
pointing to a fall in energy prices
last month when it released the CPI
yesterday. Oil prices dropped more than
2 dollars Thursday to 57.80 a barrel,
that thanks to the latest forecasts
which say the latest hurricane will
miss oil facilities in the Gulf of
Mexico.
The markets were lead by solid gains
for the Dow again thanks to that news
on inflation and falling crude. The Dow
gained 71 points. The S&P cruised to a
four year high, picking up three and
the NASDAQ reached a new high for the
year, adding nearly nine.
Stocks to watch today: can Apple build
on its 6% percent gain from yesterday?
Shares soared thanks to continued
strength of IPOD sales. Keep an eye on
Google, shares were higher after a Wall
Street firm boosted the search engine's
target price to 350 dollars up from
275. General Electric, one of the
companies due to report quarterly
earnings today.
High fuel prices continue to cost air
travelers. Delta Airlines is raising
its most expensive fairs by 100
dollars. The move comes six months
after it announced a ticket price
overhaul to attract more business
travelers. Not all airlines are
hurting. Low cost carrier Southwest
which has hedged fuel for years reports
second quarter profits rose 41% from a
year ago. That beats street
expectations.
