10 KMC Shuttle-Return --- livgen Discovery 4682 --
GRAPHIC=Discovery After a delay earlier this morning,

bad weather has prompted NASA officials
to scrub today's landing attempt for
space shuttle Discovery.

That's because of persistent low
clouds over the Florida landing site.

NASA says the seven Discovery crew
members have been advised to try again
for a landing tomorrow.

(END SOT) Peter Jennings was one of the most

respected journalists in the world ..
and a fixture on American television ..
for more than FORTY years.

Born and raised in CANADA, he joined

ABC News in 1964 .. and the following
year .. at age 26 .. he became anchor
of the ABC Evening News.

He left that post in 1968 .. and in the
years ahead .. served as a foreign
correspondent .. reporting from every
corner of the globe.

In 1978, it was back to the anchor desk
.. as part of a three-man anchor team.

Then, in 1983, Jennings was named sole
anchor and senior editor of "World News
Tonight."

He was erudite and re-assuring .. which
appealed to viewers. And he was one of
the hardest working journalists in the
business.

Jennings covered some of the biggest
news stories of our times.

The civil rights movement of the 1960s
..

Wars in Vietnam .. and the Middle East

And the 1972 summer Olympics in Munich
.. when Arab terrorists murdered
Israeli athletes.

On the eve of the Millenium, Peter
Jennings anchored 25 consecutive hours
of live television.

On September Eleventh, 2001, another
marathon .. as Jennings held the anchor
chair for hour after hour of live
coverage of the terrorist attack on
America.

And he anchored every major national
election since 1984.

Over the years, Peter Jennings' work
was honored with many awards, including
Emmies, Peabodies and du Ponts.

His professionalism won him the respect
and admiration of his colleagues .. and
the trust and loyalty of Millions of
viewers.

In April of this year, he told them
that he was battling lung cancer .. he
handled it with dignity and humor.

Thanks and good night.
