Americans - but nothing short of
radical for Japan, where guilt or
innocence has rested in the hands of
judges for 60 years.
Lawyers, judges and volunteers are in
dress rehearsal for jury trials, set to
launch in 2009.
Legal experts hail jury trials as a
huge step forward for criminal justice
here.
Japanese courts are infamous for
rendering judgment at glacial speed. It
took judges almost ten years, for
instance, to deliver a guilty
conviction earlier this year, in the
case of doomsday cult leader Shoko
Ashahara.
The hope is that jury trials will speed
up verdicts.
There's just one problem - most
Japanese are saying "no thank you" to
jury duty. An ingrained Asian tradition
of obedience to authority has made
citizens here reluctant to take a
responsibility taken for granted in
other democracies.
This woman says she's not confident
about her ability to sit on a jury.

So despite an unprecedented public
relations campaign, such as this
government-made soap opera, older
Japanese especially say deciding
someone's fate is a job for the
professionals.
"Judges are supposed to be good in

they're the experts."
Out of the million cases tried each
year, only a few dozen end in acquittal
- a statistic expected to rise once the
accused start being judged by their
peers.

first base line before collapsing, and
he too had to leave the game.
Then in the second inning Mario
Garza tried to hit Robin Reed's mug on
the wall. He doubles and just when it
looked like everything was OK - Kevin
Davidson tries to injure himself
sliding and rolling across the plate.

6 The Avs get another one in the
Salem inning as Saul Torres singles on the
3 line drive to left. The throw from
Justin Harris is about 25 feet off line
Garza scores but Salem loses it 6 to 3.

While workers removed the sign that

came to a halt during the morning rush

VDOT crews said they had to close the
highway because the sign had to be cut
into smaller pieces before it could be
removed.
The truck's trailer landed directly on
top of a car, smashing it to pieces,
yet leaving the driver unhurt and
extremely grateful.
