Altavista girl in 1973, Lorenzo Townes
spent the next 32 years in prison ...
where he committed two more assaults on
female jail staff.

The attorney general's office had
sought to keep Townes committed under a
2003 law aimed at keeping sexually
violent predators behind bars.

But in March, the Virginia
Supreme Court let Townes go, saying the
new law did not apply to his case.

Now Townes stands accused again
... this time of abducting and
sodomizing a 13-year-old girl near
Richmond.

VO-NAT The 49-year-old Townes was arrested


July 13th on charges of forcible

sodomy, abduction with intent to defile
and attempted rape.

The incident occurred about four
months after he'd been released from
prison.

The attorney general's office
released a statement today saying "Our
office sees Mr. Townes as a grave
danger to the public. This is why we
filed the petition to commit him as a
sexually violent predator.

The expert testifiying on behalf of the
commonwealth opined Mr. Townes was at
high risk for re- offending."

the suspects, they took off.

yesterday, after his wife Jennifer
allegedly shot and killed a guard
escorting him to the Kingston
courthouse.

This morning, Tennessee authorities
contacted Virginia State Police about a
possible sighting of the couple in
Roanoke.

Officials say a man saw two black
men and a woman around two o'clock this
morning in a dark-colored van near a
storage center off Hershberger Road.

Police didn't find anything, but
Tennessee authorities say they are
investigating the call.

their actions following a fatal
shooting in July 2004.

When shots were fired at a
Hershberger Road gas station and
convenience store, the officers ran
toward the gunfire, and apprehended the
suspect nearby.
