connection with a Floyd County stabbing
early this morning on Interstate 81.

This Morning A State Trooper in Rockbridge
County saw the car driving erratically.


He called in the license plate and
learned that Floyd County investigators
were looking for the vehicle.

The driver refused to pull over,
but police and sheriff's deputies
eventually stopped the car near exit
150 in Botetourt County.

The driver resisted arrest, but
was taken into custody.

looking for a suspect in yesterday's
chase.

Police say the chase began around 3:45
yesterday during a drug investigation
near Lafayette and Melrose Avenue.

Officers say when they tried to stop
the suspects, they took off.

The chase ended shortly thereafter,
when the suspects' car crashed into a
yard on Hanover Avenue.

Police arrested two of the suspects,
including a juvenile.

They are still looking for a third man
who got away on foot.

Supreme Court ordered his release from
prison, a convicted sexual offender is
charged with attacking another girl.

32 years in prison for raping a
10-year-old Altavista girl in 1973, and
two separate attacks on female prison
staff.

The state tried to have him
civilly committed to a mental
institution, but the high court ruled
that law did not apply to his case.

appropriately.

Education 7 Animation report, Virginia has decided to lower
its pass-rates for some of last year's
standards-of- learning tests.

The U-S Department of Education
is giving the state a waiver from part
of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Under the original standards the
passing rate for math and reading was
70- percent.

Under the new standards 65-
percent of students had to pass reading
and 63- percent had to pass math.

However, officials say they're
not lowering Virginia standards- they
just want schools seeing an increase in

achievement to be rewarded with making
adequate- yearly- progress.

The department plans to release
last year's adequate- yearly- progress
numbers early next week.

Yesterday, a federal appeals
court upheld the state law that
requires students to say the pledge
every day.

"electrifying" new gadget that could
help light up the world.

A-R-E Energy in Roanoke
yesterday unveiled a transportable
power plant.

The systems use recycled
locomotive engines and parts and can
run off natural gas or diesel fuel.

In a developing country, this
could fulfill the power needs of 10 to
15 -thousand people, and nearly
three-thousand here at home.

Over the next year, A-R-E Energy
hopes to construct 10-12 portable power
plants and that could add 15-20 new
jobs in Roanoke.
