The U-S Department of Education
is giving the state a waiver from part
of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Under the original standards the

passing rate for math and reading was
70- percent.

Under the new standards 65-
percent of students had to pass reading
and 63- percent had to pass math.

However, officials say they're
not lowering Virginia standards- they
just want schools seeing an increase in
achievement to be rewarded with making
adequate- yearly- progress.

Virginia's school children will
continue to recite the pledge of
allegiance.

A federal appeals court
yesterday upheld the state law that
requires students to say the pledge
every day.

The court ruled the pledge
is a patriotic exercise, not an
affirmation of religion.
