investigating a rash of vehicle tire
damages that occured Sunday night.
John Hoover Honda, Barkhouser
Ford, Barkhouser Lincoln/Mercury,
Cook's Automotive, and Woodall
Chevrolet all reported several vehicle
tires were damaged on their lots Sunday
night.
Police say someone used a small
tool to remove the valve stem cores
from the vehicles.
In all thirty-five vehicles and
nearly 150 tires were damaged.
Additionally two vehicles had the
same type of damage on Hermitage Drive.

GRAPHIC=None A cab driver was robbed late last
night on Halifax Road.
The incident happened around
11:40 P-M.
The 75-year-old driver arrived to
Oaktree Trailer Park to pick up the
passengers when five black males asked
for change, assaulted the cab driver,
and took an undisclosed amount of money
before fleeing the area on foot.
The Driver was was taken to
Danville Regional Medical Center and
treated for non-life threating injuries
sustained during the attack.

alleged drug informant in Danville six
years ago are on trial in Lynchburg's
federal court.
37-year-old Anthoine Plunkett and
32-year-old Lanny Benjamin Bodkins were
indicted in February for the 1999
murder of Tyree Wimbush.

his aunt's Danville home on Claiborne
Street.

night when their motorcycle crashed.

State Troopers aren't yet
sure how the accident happened, but no
other vehicles were involved.
An accident reconstruction
team is being brought to investigate.

GRAPHIC=I-77 Accident Sill no word on the condition of
two women from Marrietta Georgia who
were seriously injured in an accident
on Interstate 77 in Wythe County
yesterday.

They say one of them lost control
and flipped her vehicle several times
in the median before running into a
tractor trailer in the northbound
lanes.
Troopers say the truck driver
tried to avoid the crash, taking out
several feet of guardrail.
The truck driver was not injured.
But the two women were
airlifted to hospitals with what police
are calling life-threatening injuries.

Botetourt County reaches near record-
highs.

The Botetourt County Jail was
built to hold 38-inmates.
This weekend, 94-prisoners were
housed there.
Prisoners are being forced to
sleep on mattresses on the ground and
deputies are sharing one small room as
an office.
The Botetourt/Craig Regional Jail
is currently out to bid, but a
groundbreaking on the project is
expected in October.
The 124-bed facility would have
room for expansion.
Construction is expected to take
18-months.

the hotel their family owned, and said
they are honored that an auditorium in

family's name.

Opera Roanoke offices, the Downtown
Music Lab, the Dumas Drama Guild and
other organizations.

plan yesterday that calls for hiring at
least six professional E-M-Ts and
charging patients.
Local rescue squads have been
struggling to recruit volunteers and to

yesterday, for the opening of the new
Colonial Downs off-track-betting parlor
in Ridgeway.
Voters approved a referendum for
the facility back in November by a wide
margin -- unlike voters in Vinton a
couple of years ago, who passed theirs
barely by a nose.

but local leaders say they're not
impressed.

Association of Counties meeting in
Charlottesville heard from all three
candidates for governor.
If elected, Independent Russ
Potts says he would not touch real-
estate tax assessments.
Democrat Tim Kaine proposes an
optional plan that would allow
governments to exempt up to 20- percent
of the assessed value of a home.
Meanwhile, Republican Jerry
Kilgore's plan would cap assessments at
five- percent a year unless the
property is sold.
County leaders say if candidates
want to provide tax relief they should
do so at the state level and leave
local taxes alone.
